Pokémon Contests (ポケモンコンテスト Pokemon Kontesuto?) are different from regular Pokémon Battles. They test talent rather than power.

[edit] In Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald

Pokémon Contests were introduced in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire. To enter, a trainer must go to one of the four contest halls in Hoenn, located in Verdanturf Town, Fallarbor Town, Slateport City, and Lilycove City. In Pokémon Emerald, however, three contest halls are replaced by Battle Tents, and so all contests occur in Lilycove City.

There are five categories that a Pokémon can be entered into:

  • Beauty
  • Cute
  • Coo1
  • Tough
  • Smart

In order to impress the audience in the first round, the trainer must use a special type of candy, called Pokéblocks, on the participating Pokémon, in order to raise the points of the category it will be entered into.

There are four ranks of contests:

  1. Normal Rank (Verdanturf Town)
  2. Super Rank (Fallarbor Town)
  3. Hyper Rank (Slateport City)
  4. Master Rank (Lilycove City)

(All contests are in Lilycove City in Pokémon Emerald.)

In order to enter Normal Rank contests in Ruby/Sapphire, one must first get a Contest Pass in Verdanturf Town. The Contest Pass is not required in Emerald, only a Pokéblock Case from Lilycove. To enter contests in the other Ranks, the participating Pokémon must obtain a ribbon by winning the contest of the selected category in the previous rank.

[edit] Sequence of events

  1. Audience Voting: The Pokémon is shown to the audience, who then vote on their favourite. Pokémon with good stats in the selected category will gain more points here.
  2. Appeals: There are five rounds, where each Pokémon attempts to impress the judge with an attack. Using a good combination will gain the Pokémon higher appeal points, but using the same attack twice will generally lose the Pokémon points. Some moves also affect the other Pokémon, for example by making them too nervous to attack.
  3. Results: The results of both rounds are shown. The one with the highest points will then win a ribbon. If it already has a ribbon for that particular rank and category, then it will win an item.

[edit] In Diamond/Pearl

In Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, Pokémon Contests have evolved into Super Contests.

[edit] Sequence of events

  1. Visual Judgement: The first round of Contests where the player dresses up their Pokémon in certain items, such as crowns. These still use visual stats, but they are gained by eating Pofin.
  2. Dance Judgement: The second round, where the participating Pokémon joins in a dance routine by pressing buttons. The Pokémon get rated based on rhythm and coordination.
  3. Performance Judgement: Same as the "Appeals" round in Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald. Participating Pokémon attempt to impress the judge with their attacks.

[edit] In the anime

Pokémon Contests in the anime are different from the contests in the game. The system of Ranks and Categories is not present, although some contests require the participants to have a certain number of ribbons. For example, an R1 contest requires the trainer to already have one ribbon.

There are also more contest Halls in Hoenn. Eight are seen in the anime, located in these places:

After winning five ribbons, a Coordinator can qualify for the Grand Festival, the contest equivalent of the League Tournaments, which takes place in Slateport City.

In the anime plot, May was originally going to challenge Gym Leaders with Ash Ketchum. However, after seeing a contest in Rustboro City, she decides to enter contests instead. She enters contests throughout Hoenn, until she qualifies for the Grand Festival, which takes place shortly before the Hoenn League Tournament.

There are also contest Halls in Kanto. Six have seen in the anime so far, located in these places:

  • Saffron City
  • Silver Town
  • Wisteria Town
  • Chrysanthemum Island
  • Gardenia Town
  • Mulberry Town

Pokémon Contests in Hoenn are hosted by Vivian Meridian. A judging panel of three - Raul Contesta, Sukizo and Nurse Joy are to score a Pokémon Coordinator's appeals out of 10 (a .5 score may be given). In the Kanto region, the MC for Pokémon Contests is Lilian Meridian, Vivian's sister. The Grand Festival is held in .

[edit] Sequence of events

  1. Every Coordinator uses a Pokémon to appeal. Three judges each give it a score out of 10. Later in the series, this event was forgotten, until the Grand Festival, where each judge gives the coordinators a score out of 20.
  2. In some contests, there is more than one appealing round (such as the Grand Festival). In this case, the passing appeals from the first round appeal once again in this round before the final elimination is made to decide who will be making it to the battle rounds. This appeal is done with a different Pokémon. There is a three minute time limit for this appeal.
  3. The four coordinators that make the best appeals go into the semi-final, in the form of a rated Pokémon battle. The battle has a time limit, which is 5 minutes. Each coordinator starts their battle with a predetermined amount of points. If the Pokémon's attack fails, is not done gracefully or if the Pokémon is attacked by its opponent, then the coordinator will lose points. If the points hit 0 or if the coordinator has less points than his/her opponent when time runs out, then the coordinator will lose. If both Pokémon do not attack, resulting in a staring contest, a yellow card will be issued to both coordinators, cutting their points to half. There seems to be a further penalty if the staring contest continues, but has not yet been revealed. If a coordinator knocks out the opponent's Pokémon, then he/she will automatically win.
  4. The final is the same as the semi-final. The winner of this gets the ribbon.

[edit] In the manga

In Hidenori Kusaka's Pokémon Adventures, Ruby participates in Contests, while Sapphire battles in Gyms.

In Pokémon Chamo-Chamo Pretty, Haruka enters her Torchic in Cuteness Contests.
