The suburb of Point Piper is located on Sydney Harbour, beside the suburbs of Rose Bay, Bellevue Hill and Double Bay.

Point Piper is arguably the most lucrative suburb in Australia, home to some of the most expensive and exclusive homes in Australia. There are only eleven streets in Point Piper. The main road running through Point Piper is 'Wolseley Road'; its status stands as Australia's ultimate address. Today the price per sqm of real estate in Point Piper is one of the most expensive in the world. Property writer Cindy Martin calculated in 2002 that the total value of the properties on the 1km waterfront section of Wolseley Road was worth, in total, $720 million.[1]

The streets in Point Piper are: Buckhurst Avenue, Longworth Avenue, New South Head Road, Redvers Street, Wolseley Road, Wolseley Crescent, Wingadal Place, Wentworth Place, Wentworth Street, Wunulla Road, Wyuna Road.

[edit] History

Point Piper was named after Captain John Piper (1773-1851), a Scottish-born military officer, who arrived in the colony in 1792 and built his mansion here on 190 acres of land granted in 1816. After a review of his position showed that he had mismanaged funds (although was not accused of being corrupt), he attempted to drown himself in the harbour. He subsequently sold his holdings at Point Piper, Rose Bay, Neutral Bay and Petersham for £5,000. His magnificent home was unfortunately destroyed in the 1850's.

In 2002, an Australian record price was achieved for a residential property when Altona, at 54-56 Wunulla Road, sold for $28 million.[2]

The area is very affluent; it is almost impossible to find anything for less than $1M, even a tiny, unrenovated flat, with no views. Prices for apartments usually begin at $3M, often surpassing the $10M mark, whereas houses in the suburb sell for $10M to $30M. John Symond's mega mansion on Wingadal Place, reportedly cost over $70M to build (excluding land), easily making it Australia's most expensive privately owned residential home.[3]
