The Point Foundation was a non-profit organization founded in 1972 by Stewart Brand. The foundation was established to give away $1 million in three years to assorted effective individuals. Point was the non-profit foundation which ran all the Whole Earth activities through 2001. Point also funded projects including, the Jonah Project (the first whale-saving program), the New Alchemy Institute, and the Trust for Public Lands. Point supplied start-up funding for Heyday Books. Point produced the first full-color map to show the earth's bioregions. In 1984, Point established the WELL (Whole Earth 'Lectronic Link), a computer teleconferencing system which pioneered community networking on the internet.
