Point Edward, Ontario

Point Edward is a village (adjacent to Sarnia, Ontario) in the Canadian province of Ontario. Point Edward sits opposite Port Huron, Michigan at the mouth of the St. Clair River. As of 2006, the population was 2,019. The population in 2001 was 2,001. (A population change of -3.9%). The area is 3.27 square kilometres. In the summer of 2003, Point Edward celebrated its 125th anniversary.
The mayor of Point Edward is Dick Kirkland.
Most businesses in Point Edward are independently owned. The only franchises located in the village are hotels.
During the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta and 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Brad Boston, a citizen of Point Edward, was present on the Canadian Sailing team, which finished 13th overall.
Bridgeview Elementary School is the only school located in the village. The two most notable landmarks in Point Edward are the Blue Water Bridge (actually Bridges) and the Point Edward Charity Casino.
The 402 Highway in Point Edward is under a heavy expansion, which will cause traffic detours along Front St. for the next couple years.

[edit] Under the bridge
The park area under the bridge is a very popular spot for people to relax on those warm summer afternoons and evenings. Many people enjoy fries from one of the three "chip trucks", or just relaxing while watching boats pass in the river. Many times you'll also see teenagers swimming in the river.

Point Edward is home to Bridgeview Public School. It was opened in the late 1940's to house the growing number of children in the village. The previous school was located where Optimist Park currently is.
Bridgeview houses grades from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8. It also has one of the best outfitted classroom facilities for special needs students in South-Western Ontario. Lambton County has closed a number of elementary schools due to low capacity. It is rumoured that Bridgeview is at about 50% capacity, yet it remains open because of the highly valued special needs facilities.

[edit] Blue Water Bridge Authority
The Blue Water Bridge Authority, which maintains the Blue Water Bridge and customs has been an aggressive entity in Point Edward. They have bought and closed several houses along St. Clair and Alexandra Ave. The Bridge Authority owns and maintains a great deal of land in Point Edward although there is no room left for them to expand.
