Point Cook is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Its Local Government Area is the City of Wyndham.

It is also the location of RAAF Base Williams, Point Cook, the birthplace of the Royal Australian Air Force, and the current home of the RAAF Museum.

Point Cook is one of the big growth regions in Melbourne's western suburbs urban sprawl coming from the north and the east. Point Cook is famous for its coastal park with a famous homestead. A new Point Cook town centre is being constructed on the corner of Dunnings Rd & Boardwalk Blvd, which is expected to open December 2007. This has now commenced building.

The town centre will be the major focal point for the Point Cook community, with the development to include a main street retail and commercial town centre, up to 90 specialty shops, as well as Coles, Aldi and Target outlets.

Point Cook is currently accessed via Point Cook road or the Forsythe Road offramps from the Princess Freeway. A new Palmers Road offramp is currently under construction, this will hopefully limit some of the current delays caused by Point Cook road

[edit] The RAAF Base

The RAAF base contains a museum for visitors, most of what is left are prohibited and restricted areas. The RAAF Willams Base contains a Horizon Tank, one of three in the world, it was used in the television series Moby Dick and Noah's Ark.

[edit] Brief history

Point Cook was originally spelt Point Cooke, and named in 1836. Curiously, the geographical feature is still spelled as Point Cooke, despite almost all other references dropping the "e". In 1853 the pastoralist Thomas Chirnside added the farmlands of Point Cook to his holdings. He built the famous Point Cook Homestead of twenty-five rooms in 1857.
