Poha (rice)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Poha is a convenience food made from rice pressed into flakes. It is reconstituted with hot water to make a rice porridge or paste, depending on the amount of water added. Poha is very similar to instant mashed potatoes in appearance, uses, and spirit. Poha is used frequently in Indian cuisine.
The dish made up from this poha is called "pohe" in marathi or "avlakki bhat" in kannada. One can cook it with adding onion/potatoes/chillies etc. In Indore, it's served with sev & nukti - indori namkeen. There is also ussal pohe i.e., pohe with chole & moth. In Indore, Jalebi is served as a sweet with pohe - as Pohe - Jalebi.
One can add coconut/Mixture as a seasoning and can have it with chutny.
Though this is part of cuisine in several parts of India, it is believed to have originated in Maharashtra. On a lighter note, a term "Kaandey Pohey", which means pohey with chopped onions, is used whenever a guy sees a girl to get married!
