Podunavlje (Serbia)

Podunavlje is the name of a proposed new administrative unit of Serbia.

Some political parties in Serbia (notably Democratic Party of Serbia and Šumadija Coalition) propose the creation of the new administrative units of Serbia. According to these proposals, Serbia would be divided into 6 regions: Vojvodina (capital city: Novi Sad), Kosovo (capital city: Priština), Šumadija (capital city: Kragujevac), Podunavlje (capital city: Niš), Podrinje (capital city: Užice) and Belgrade City Region.

In the second century, Niš (Naissus) was the main city in Mesia Superior, which was a province of the Roman Empire.

In the 11th century, Duchy of Niš was a province of the Byzantine Empire.

In 1162, župan Desa was ruler around Niš.

Between 1791 and 1878, Pashaluk of Niš was a province of the Ottoman Empire. In 1878, this territory became part of Serbia.

Between 1922 and 1929, Province of Niš (Niška Oblast) was administrative unit of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes.

Between 1929 and 1941, the Morava Banovina was a province of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. Capital city of this province was Niš.
