Plumsted Township is a Township in Ocean County, New Jersey, United States. As of the United States 2000 Census, the township population was 7,275.

Plumsted Township was incorporated as a township by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 11, 1845, from portions of Jackson Township, while the area was still part of Monmouth County. Plumsted Township became part of the newly-created Ocean County on February 15, 1850.[1]

New Egypt (2000 Census population of 2,519) is a census-designated place and unincorporated area located within Plumsted Township.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 104.1 km² (40.2 mi²). 103.7 km² (40.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it (0.50%) is water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 7,275 people, 2,510 households, and 2,002 families residing in the township. The population density was 70.2/km² (181.8/mi²). There were 2,628 housing units at an average density of 25.4/km² (65.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the township was 93.90% White, 2.30% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.73% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 1.36% from other races, and 1.57% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.85% of the population.

There were 2,510 households out of which 41.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.0% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 20.2% were non-families. 15.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.90 and the average family size was 3.22.

In the township the population was spread out with 28.5% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 34.0% from 25 to 44, 22.0% from 45 to 64, and 8.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 99.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.1 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $61,357, and the median income for a family was $62,255. Males had a median income of $42,610 versus $34,355 for females. The per capita income for the township was $22,433. About 4.3% of families and 5.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.

The Township of Plumsted functions under the Township Committee form of government, which consist of five elected members with a term of office of three years each.

The Township Committee, at its annual re-organization meeting during the first week of January, selects from among its five members a Mayor and a Deputy Mayor, and appoints from its members a liaison for each Township's Administrative Departments.

The Plumsted Township Committee consists of Mayor Ronald S. Dancer, Deputy Mayor Joseph J. Przywara, Kenneth H. Francis, Bonnie Quesnel and Ada G. Roberts.[3]

[edit] Federal, state and county representation

Plumsted Township is in the Fourth Congressional District and is part of New Jersey's 30th Legislative District.[4]

New Jersey's Fourth Congressional District, covering portions of Burlington County, Mercer County, Monmouth County and Ocean County, is represented by Christopher Smith (R). New Jersey is represented in the Senate by Frank Lautenberg (D, Cliffside Park) and Bob Menendez (D, Hoboken).

The 30th legislative district of the New Jersey Legislature is represented in the State Senate by Robert Singer (R, Lakewood Township) and in the Assembly by Ronald S. Dancer (R, Jackson Township) and Joseph R. Malone (R, Bordentown). The Governor of New Jersey is Jon Corzine (D, Hoboken).

Ocean County is governed by a five-member Board of Chosen Freeholders. Ocean County's Freeholders are: John C. Bartlett Jr., John P. Kelly, James F. Lacey, Gerry P. Little and Joseph H. Vicari.

The Plumsted Township School District educates more than 1,800 students in kindergarten though grade 12, including special education students in pre-kindergarten. Students in Pre-kindergarten to Grade 1 attend New Egypt Primary School. Students in Grades 2-5 attend the Dr. Gerald H. Woehr Elementary School. Students in grades 6-8 attend the New Egypt Middle School. New Egypt High School educates more than 500 students.
