[edit] Teenaged pilots

I wondered if the pilots had to be teenagers for some reason? I thought it had to do with the fact that their minds more easily synchronized with the EVAs? Is this right? I was thinking about adding this clip:

"The higher a pilot's synchronization ratio, the better the pilot can control the Eva and fight more adeptly. In addition, adults cannot pilot the Eva because their minds are not malleable enough, so all the Eva pilots are teenagers whose minds easily conform to synchronization."

—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Rhetth (talkcontribs).

That may be the in-universe explanation; however, I always thought it was a coincidence, because my understanding had been that the pilots could synch because their mother's soul was wholly or partially in the EVA (Rei having no soul of her own so she could synch anyway, or something like that) and the angels happened to attack when the relevant children were teenaged. The out of universe explanation is obvious: it's just convention for mecha anime to have teenaged pilots; reasons why this would be so are left to the reader as an exercise. :) --Gwern (contribs) 17:20 13 December 2006 (GMT)
