A number of German Jews came to the United States in the years before the Civil War. Hermann Plessner was one of those, coming to Michigan in the 1850s. He served in the 9th Ohio Cavalry Volunteers in the Civil War.
As they settled the frontier, male Plessners met and tended to marry non-Jewish women. Today there are American Plessners who are Jewish, Catholic, Lutheran and Protestant.
