Episode chronology

"Playful Like Paradice" is an episode of the series Ōban Star-Racers.

After "Molly" has a dream about her mother, the earth team's racer is sabotaged by Paradice, a cat like creature who views the Great Race of Oban as nothing more than a game. After a quick repair, they race against each other, and Molly inadvertently learns about the ultimate prize from Paradice...

[edit] Plot

One night, "Molly" awakes to discover what appears to be an image of her deceased racer mother. After waking up from her dream, Don Wei, in his own fashion, tells Molly that she will now officially be the Earth Team's pilot in place of Rick, who appears to missing in action. Molly and Jordan later encounter a strange token for some time type of amusement center. It seems to be a prize in a contest Jordan doesn't remember entering. Neither of them suspects that it is all a set up planned by who would later turn out to be their next opponent, Paradice (a pun on "paradise" and "pair of dice", the latter of which refers to her personality), who sees the Great Race of Ōban as nothing more than a game. While Molly and Jordan are playing one of the games, they are unaware that they are controlling the Arrow II remotely, causing damage to it in the process, and nearly killing one of the mechanics. It was later discovered to be the work of a virus planted into the Earth Team's security system, which Paradice taunts them with as being easy enough for a 12 year old to crack. In truth she is a racing prodigy actually around that age. There is only time for quick repairs before the race begins using the "arena match" rule: they fly into an arena with various tunnels leading in many directions, and they have to find the tunnel out of the arena. Paradice seems to have the advantage as she controls her racer remotely and is able to see anywhere on the track through her computer monitors. During the race, Paradice declares that the "ultimate prize" is "any wish, any dream", something Don Wei was not previously made aware of. As the Earth Team desperately searches for the exit out of the arena, the Arrow II hits a pipe. They realize that they hit the same pipe when they entered the arena, so the exit is actually at the entrance. After the Earth Team wins the race, Don Wei confronts the president, and asks him to tell him what the "ultimate prize" is before he risks his team any further. When Molly asks Don Wei about it, he only tells her that she will have to win the Great Race of Ōban to find out.

[edit] Trivia

  • The ship selection screen in Para-Dice's racing simulator shows several other characters' racers, along with their names. Toros' ship is identified as the "Trident" (just as it is in the next episode), Flint's is called the "Flying Fortress", and Super-Racer's is the "S-Shark". What appears to be Rush's ship is visible above the Whizzing Arrow II, but its name is not visible.
