[edit] History
The first version was released on March 2002 by Shannara Corporation. A website and community forum was established later that year. Towards the end of that year, the software was sold to Kaelian Software. In 2004, development halted. As of 2007, Player Worlds was back under development by Shannara Corporation but is currently halted again and is most probably a dead software. Player Worlds is currently run by Bradyok whom does not have the source, however he is making his own engine, XtremeWorlds, that will be the successor to Player Worlds.
[edit] Technology
The software uses Direct Draw from DirectX 7 and Visual Basic as its core. The system requirements are generally very low, however, the network bandwidth is not optimized. The networking makes use of WinSock. Sound effects and music are rendered using the FMod sound system API's.
[edit] Versions
[edit] Player Worlds 1.x
Making its debut in 2002, the first generation Player Worlds integrated rendering, rough collision detection, AI, networking, and scripting into one complete engine. Due to the goal of ease of use, quite a few trade offs were made.
A major bug fix version 1.4.6, along with an OS X client and Linux server ports were due on Player Worlds' 5th birthday but will probably never be.
