"Play with Fire" is a song written by Hilary Duff, Kara DioGuardi, Rhett Lawrence and will.i.am, and recorded by Duff for her fourth studio album, Dignity (2007). It was released to U.S. radio as the album's first single on August 21, 2006 (see 2006 in music).[1]

[edit] Recording and style

Duff said that because she wanted the song to be the album's first single, the music video was filmed before the track had been completed. On the night following the rehearsals and wardrobe fittings for the video, Duff returned to the studio and finished recording the song three hours, before a thunderstorm knocked out some of the equipment. Producer Rhett Lawrence submitted the song to the makers of the video the next morning, less than three hours before shooting was due to begin. "It kind of worked out perfectly", Duff said of the situation.[2]

According to Duff, "Play with Fire" and the other songs on the album are "more dancey" than her previous music and make use of more real instruments. "[I]t's fun and funky and different, something new for me. It's really cool", she said.[3] She has also described the album's sound as "a little less pop-rock and more electronic-sounding. It has a lot of dance melodies."[4]

The song is played during the first club scene in the 2006 film Material Girls, in which Duff stars. It is not listed in the credits on the DVD release; instead her song "Happy" is in its place. "Play with Fire" was originally "Happy", but the song's lyrics and instrumentals were changed, and "Happy" is now a song of its own. A high quality version of the "Play with Fire" video can be viewed on the DVD for the film.

[edit] Commercial release

In early December, after its release to XM Satellite Radio, "Play with Fire" peaked at number 113 on Mediabase's Top 40 chart.[5][6] The song was released for digital download to LAUNCHcast and Sony Connect on October 3, 2006,[7] and to iTunes on October 9.[8] It did not appear on the U.S. Hot 100,[9] but it has become a minor club hit, peaking at number thirty-one on the Hot Dance Club Play chart in early December.[10] The UK CD single was to be released on November 6, but it was pulled from release.[11]

The single nabbed a positive review from Billboard magazine's Chuck Taylor, who described the song as "less of the clichéd little-girl-playing-tough-pop/rocker than it is a truly intriguing exploration into darker, more experimental melodic structures that could attract a whole new crowd of late-night dancefloor minions to the Duff camp."[12]

[edit] Video and remixes

Its video was directed by Alex and Martin and filmed in July. According to the directors, the video is "real and surreal" and contains visual effects that are reminiscent of a "house of mirrors" as seen in an amusement park. "For example, we could see a glass reflection close-up of Hilary vibrate and explode which then transitions to a completely different image behind her, then disintegrates into a new performing shot", they said.[1] The video's world premiere was on August 15 on MTV's Total Request Live in the U.S., and it peaked at number five on the show's top ten video countdown; it remained on it for nineteen days, until September 14.[13] The video peaked at number one for four weeks on music videos charts in Brazil.[citation needed]

Richard Vission remixed "Play with Fire"; his official website stated "We can't say who Richard's latest mix is just yet, but it's hot!"[14] His remix achieved success on the WorldSpace Satellite Radio Chart, peaking at number one for the week of November 24.[15] Billboard called the Richard Vission radio edit "a true work of art, refashioning Duff as a potential innovator - and heaven knows there are precious few of those these days ... It will be fascinating to see if this is an enchanting fluke, or if America is destined to at last see the arrival of its own Kylie."[12]

A re-edit of the video was released in late October 2006 to accompany the Richard Vission remix. The video can be viewed on Duff's MySpace page.
