Platy, Greece

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

(a) Platy (or Platì) is a village in Greece, in the east-southeast part of the Imathia Prefecture - lat:40,6403 / log: 22.533. In reality was founded in 1924 by Greek refugees from Turkey after the disaster of Asia Minor. They came from the villages of Farassa area, in Kappadokia region (today the city in Turkey is called Peras or Feke), after many stops during their voyage till their final destination, which was Platy.

Until 1924 there was a small village but with a strategic position due to its railway station (is a key point for the railway network of Greece). It is 35 km from Veria, 40 from Thessaloniki and 512 from Athens. Platy remained a small village with 2.300 inhabitants (as a separate community) but with very important role in the area of Imathia.

In the industrial area of Platy until the mid '90s were working over 1.500 workers from Platy, Veria and Thessaloniki. But after the economic crisis of 1999-2002 many of the factories based in the industrial zone of Platy have been closed. Today there are only 3 factories, 1 of them is having a national importance (is the sugar state-owned factory "EBZ" - Hellenic Industry of Sugar). Some other small factories are based in the same industrial zone.

In 1994 it absorbed 3 smaller communities and in year 1998 another 9. Today is the center of the municipality of PLATY (about 15.000 inhabitants).

In Platy - the center of the municipality - there are about 2.300 people. Plati has a frequent communication with Athens and Thessaloniki by train. The visitor can reach Platy by train or car (following A1, A2 and E90 routes). Also last years there are discussions about the old military airport of Platy to become civil airport. The airport is about 2 km NW of Platy.
