Platform bed

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Platform beds are beds whose base consists of a raised, flat, hard, horizontal surface meant to support a mattress. Platform beds provide firm cushioning and with the support of slats, they eliminate the need for a box spring or a mattress foundation; they give adequate support for a mattress by itself.

[edit] History

The first platform beds were better defined as loft beds. The sleeping area was raised on four poles so that there would be space for everyday living activities below. As living became more luxurious, the beds became shorter. Presently, the platform bed has seen a popularity revival.

The styles that are currently available utilize two main mediums: wood and metal. The platform bed may or may not encompass a footboard.

Platform beds are able to support a mattress without the use of a box spring, although many beds are able to accommodate the box spring if desired.

Now it's even possible to find platform beds and bedroom furniture in the eco-furniture category which are made with sustainable forest resources.

[edit] Contemporary platform beds

Many platform beds have a contemporary style that usually feature clean lines, neutral elements and bold color characteristics. New styles are incorporating microfiber and leather padding on the headboard for use as a backrest when sitting in bed.
