There are two known platelet derived growth fator receptors termed PDGFR-alpha and PDGFR-beta.
- PDGFR-a binds all PDGF isoforms (PDGF-AA,PDGF-AB and PDGF-BB).
- PDGFR-b binds PDGF-BB with high affinity, PDGF-AB with lower affinity, but does not to bind PDGF-AA with any appreciable affinity.
Both receptors are coupled to tyrosine kinase.
It has been shown that PDGF-b receptors are not present in healthy tissue in vivo but are upregulated in response to inflammation. It is unknown if PDGF-a behaves in the same way.
