Plastiras Dam

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Dam at Lake Plastiras was constructed during the period of 1958–1962. Prime Miniser Nikolaos Plastiras oversaw construction of the Dam at the Tavropos (Megdovas) River in order to form a lake. Both the Dam and the Lake bear the name "Plastiras".

The Dam was constructed mainly by the local people of the mountain region where it lies, the Agrafa region. It's construction offered an economic boost to the area in many ways and contributed to the modernization of Greece. The electricity supplied by the Dam is used in most of mainland Greece, north of the Peloponnese.

The Dam and it's lake provide a year-round source of water for the people of the Agrafa region and a significant irrigation source to the farmers in the plains of Thessaly.

This region was once the poorest and most isolated areas of Greece and now people from all over the world come to visit the dam, the lake and it's magnificent natural surroundings.
