Plasmodium cnemidophori

Plasmodium cnemidophori is a parasite of the genus Plasmodium subgenus Sauramoeba.
Like all Plasmodium species P. cnemidophori has both vertebrate and insect hosts. The vertebrate hosts for this parasite are lizards.

The parasite was first described by Carini in 1941.
Pigment is not located in a distinct vacuole.
Large schizonts visibly enlarge the erythrocyte.
The schizonts are usually polar in position, rounded in shape, and may produce over 100 merozoites.
The gametocytes are are elongated and lateral in position.
Mature gametocytes visibly enlarge the erythrocyte.
