Plano, Illinois

Plano is a city in Kendall County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,633 at the 2000 census. The city is rapidly growing with new subdivisions such as Lakewood Springs nearly complete and several other developments under construction or in the planning stages. Plano is one of the fastest growing communities in the Chicago metropolitan area.
The historic Mies van der Rohe designed Farnsworth House is located on the Fox River, south of Plano.

Plano is located at GR1.
(41.663137, -88.535987)According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 9.2 km² (3.6 mi²). 9.1 km² (3.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it (1.12%) is water.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 5,633 people, 1,901 households, and 1,437 families residing in the city. The population density was 619.6/km² (1,603.3/mi²). There were 1,973 housing units at an average density of 217.0/km² (561.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 82.34% White, 0.37% African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 14.59% from other races, and 2.13% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 25.79% of the population.
There were 1,901 households out of which 41.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.0% were married couples living together, 10.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.4% were non-families. 20.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.96 and the average family size was 3.46.
In the city the population was spread out with 31.4% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 31.7% from 25 to 44, 18.3% from 45 to 64, and 9.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 97.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.1 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $46,526, and the median income for a family was $50,950. Males had a median income of $35,938 versus $23,409 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,837. About 4.6% of families and 5.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.1% of those under age 18 and 5.7% of those age 65 or over.

- Plano Molding, famous for manufacturing fishing tackle boxes, is located in Plano.[1]
- Former Speaker of the House of Representatives Dennis Hastert lives in Plano.[2]
- Birthplace of the Reaper. In July, 1831, Cyrus Hall McCormick invented the mechanical reaper, known as the Plano Harvester. The Plano Harvester combined all the steps that earlier harvesting machines had performed separately. His time-saving invention allowed farmers to more than double their crop size and spurred innovations in farm machinery.[citation needed]
- Plano was the one time headquarters for the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (now known as Community of Christ). Joseph Smith III, son of slain LDS movement founder Joseph Smith, Jr., moved to Plano in 1866 and ran the chruch's printing operation from there.
