In the fictional universe of Warhammer 40,000 each planet has a division of troops known also known as the Planetary Defence Force.

During the Great Crusade, the Imperial Army was originally used as a garrison for worlds captured by the Space Marine Legions, but with the Imperium expanding at an amazing rate most of the Imperial Army was moved off planet whilst leaving a section behind. After the Horus Heresy the PDF was made an official organisation

Every planet in the Imperium has to pay a tithe of troops for the PDF depending on the wealth and size of the planet. In the Dawn of war novel (Goto, 2004) the PDF of Tartarus is actually an Imperial Guard regiment.
