[edit] History
Started by Seattle multi-instrumentalist James van Leuven after working as a drummer for various bands and projects, most notably Automaton(Pacifico Recordings, US) and The Subdebs (K Records, US), James began writing songs from his perspective; a drummer. This experiment resulted in moving from punk rock into more cinematic electronic and hip-hop musical styles. The first EP, Like a Ship Sailing' (Luckyhorse Industries, U.S. 2001), introduced the Plan B sound to the world, with van Leuven's supporting solo performances often punctuated by forays into the crowd for break dancing to his own output.
Acclaim from that EP sent James touring around the world, including a long stint in France, where he then released the second EP "Keepsake" (Ggoo22, France 2003), which moved Plan B into more group-oriented output. This continued upon James' Seattle return, with the performing collective often adopting the Plan B Indie-Orchestra moniker as their ranks grew. They released a digital EP "Buoy" in 2005 featuring a reproduction of Fugazi's Waiting Room. And in 2006 their first full length album, I'm the Captain, Where We Going? (Fourthcity, US/Ggoo22, France) featuring guest musicians like cellist Brent Arnold (Modest Mouse, Built to Spill), violinist Jen Kozel (Quasi, Elliott Smith), violinist Sarah Standard (Carissa's weird) and analog mixdown collaboration with Phil Ek (Built to Spill, Modest Mouse, Band of Horses, etc).
