Plainfield is a city in Bremer County, Iowa, United States. The population was 438 at the 2000 census.

Plainfield is located at 42°50′41″N, 92°32′5″W (42.844652, -92.534623)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.9 km² (0.3 mi²), all land.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 438 people, 194 households, and 123 families residing in the city. The population density was 512.5/km² (1,347.4/mi²). There were 202 housing units at an average density of 236.3/km² (621.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 99.54% White, 0.23% Native American, and 0.23% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.91% of the population.

There were 194 households out of which 29.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% were married couples living together, 7.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.1% were non-families. 30.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.26 and the average family size was 2.85.

In the city the population was spread out with 24.9% under the age of 18, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 25.6% from 25 to 44, 23.1% from 45 to 64, and 17.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 100.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $39,688, and the median income for a family was $48,750. Males had a median income of $30,536 versus $24,464 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,156. About 4.6% of families and 8.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 5.7% of those age 65 or over.
