Plainedge, New York

Plainedge is a hamlet (and census-designated place) in Nassau County, New York, USA. The population was 9,195 at the 2000 census.
Plainedge is a community located mainly in the Town of Oyster Bay with a small section located in the Town of Hempstead. In that section (Town of Hempstead), residents are served by the Levittown Post Office. Efforts to secure a Plainedge Post Office have not been successful.

Plainedge is located at (40.723052, -73.478686)GR1.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 3.7 km² (1.4 mi²), all land.
[edit] Demographics
As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 9,195 people, 3,028 households, and 2,458 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,482.7/km² (6,425.8/mi²). There were 3,052 housing units at an average density of 824.0/km² (2,132.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 94.41% White, 0.54% African American, 0.10% Native American, 2.45% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.36% from other races, and 1.11% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.14% of the population.
There were 3,028 households out of which 35.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.9% were married couples living together, 9.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 18.8% were non-families. 15.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.03 and the average family size was 3.36.
In the CDP the population was spread out with 24.7% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 30.8% from 25 to 44, 22.4% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 91.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.9 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $67,560, and the median income for a family was $75,588. Males had a median income of $55,091 versus $35,960 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $25,752. About 1.7% of families and 2.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 2.1% of those under age 18 and 4.8% of those age 65 or over.

The Plainedge School District currently consists of five schools:
Three elementary schools: Eastplain, John H. West Memorial School and Charles Schwarting Memorial School
One middle school: Plainedge Middle School, a replacement for Sylvia Packard Middle School
One high school: Plainedge High School
The District Superintendent is Dr. John Richman and the Assistant Superintendent is Christine P'Simer.
Christine P'Simer has been selected by the Board of Education to serve as district Superintendent starting July 1, 2007 replacing Dr. John Richman who will be retiring.
The District board members are: Maryann Capone, Cathy Flanagan, Allan Fox, Loretta Giardina, Douglas Pascarella, Frank Presuto, and Pat Zinke. Mrs. Zinke currently serves as president of the board.

January 17th 2007 it was announced that James Devlin and Kaitlin Duncan were named as 2 of the 300 semifinalists of the Intel STS. There were a record 1,705 entrants nationwide. January 31st Kaitlin Duncan was named a finalist in the Intel STS. She is one of 40 finalists and will compete against the other finalist for a $100,000 scholarship in Washington DC this March.

The 2005-2006 school year's budget was stripped to a minimum operating budget because of 2 failed community budget votes. This forced the school district onto an austerity budget. For the first time in Long Island history, all athletics were cut entirely from the district. A group of parents formed the Plainedge Parents Athletic Club and started SOS (Save our Sports) and raised over $500,000 with help from various donations from public companies to bring back every, single sports team. The Plainedge High School Red Devils then proceeded to win the Nassau Division III Football Championship, only to lose to Huntington High School in the Division III Finals. The Huntington Blue Devils then proceeded to give a standing ovation to the Red Devils as they walked off the field (As seen in the December 5 issue of Sports Illustrated Magazine). Linebacker, Kurt Steubing, won the Top Linebacker Award for the Island, John Scheffer won the top QB Award for the Island and Coach Rob Shaver won Nassau Coach of the Year. All three made the All-Long Island Team.
