It is found in a similar area to Placostylus ambagiosus worthyi, but is of more recent occurrence and survives in a few places in flax clumps.
The shell is of distinctive shape, the spire being twice the height of the aperture, which is short and D-shaped. The basal lip, columellar and parietal processes are the best developed.
Height is up to 86 mm, and width up to 37 mm.
Placostylus ambagiosus consobrinus is classified by the New Zealand Department of Conservation as being Nationally Critical.
