Pittsfield is a town in Somerset County, Maine, United States. The population was 4,214 at the 2000 census. It is located at latitude 44°46'57" North; longitude 69°23'2" West. Maine Central Institute, a private boarding school founded in 1866, is located in Pittsfield.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 126.2 km² (48.7 mi²). 124.7 km² (48.2 mi²) of it is land and 1.4 km² (0.6 mi²) of it (1.13%) is water. Pittsfield is located at approximately latitude 44°46'57" North; longitude 69°23'2" West.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 4,214 people, 1,627 households, and 1,147 families residing in the town. The population density was 33.8/km² (87.5/mi²). There were 1,808 housing units at an average density of 14.5/km² (37.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 96.27% White, 0.88% Black or African American, 0.40% Native American, 1.09% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 0.09% from other races, and 1.14% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.64% of the population.
There were 1,627 households out of which 36.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.6% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.5% were non-families. 24.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 2.96.
In the town the population was spread out with 27.9% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 22.1% from 45 to 64, and 13.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 92.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $32,868, and the median income for a family was $40,612. Males had a median income of $31,673 versus $22,283 for females. The per capita income for the town was $16,065. About 10.0% of families and 12.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 17.0% of those under age 18 and 7.6% of those age 65 or over.
