Avon is a town in Hendricks County, Indiana, United States. The population was 6,248 at the 2000 census. The 2005 Indiana Population Estimate Update estimated the population as 8,918.[1]

Avon was incorporated in 1995. Previous town names included Hampton, White Lick, Smootsdell and New Philadelphia. The actual origin of the name Avon is unknown.

Avon is located at 39°45′47″N, 86°23′16″W (39.763160, -86.387900)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 16.5 km² (6.4 mi²). 16.5 km² (6.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.16% is water.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 6,248 people, 2,127 households, and 1,786 families residing in the town. The population density was 378.1/km² (979.2/mi²). There were 2,240 housing units at an average density of 135.6/km² (351.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 95.87% White, 0.58% African American, 0.26% Native American, 1.41% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.72% from other races, and 1.10% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.36% of the population.

There were 2,127 households out of which 51.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 75.4% were married couples living together, 5.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 16.0% were non-families. 12.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 3.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.94 and the average family size was 3.22.

In the town the population was spread out with 33.2% under the age of 18, 4.8% from 18 to 24, 39.3% from 25 to 44, 18.1% from 45 to 64, and 4.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 101.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $66,782, and the median income for a family was $68,205. Males had a median income of $48,542 versus $31,010 for females. The per capita income for the town was $24,740. About 2.7% of families and 2.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 2.9% of those under age 18 and 15.8% of those age 65 or over.

Avon's public school system is the Avon Community School Corporation. The mascot is the Oriole.

The Avon High School marching band, Avon Marching Black and Gold, has been ranked number one in the state of Indiana by the Indiana State School Music Association (ISSMA) six years in a row (two times in Class B, four times in Class A). They have been nationally ranked as one of the best bands in the country (number seven in 2006) during Bands of America Grand Nationals.[2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]
