Pinyin (Traditional Chinese: 拼音; pinyin: pīnyīn) is a system of romanization for the Chinese language, where pin means "spell" and yin means "sound". It can refer to several transcription systems for Chinese:
- Hanyu Pinyin (Hànyǔ Pīnyīn), what most people mean when referring to pinyin.
- Tongyong Pinyin (Tōngyòng pīnyīn), a derivative of Hanyu Pinyin created in the late 1990s in the Republic of China (Taiwan).
- Wade-Giles romanization system (Wēituǒmǎ Pīnyīn).
- Standard Cantonese Pinyin, a standard romanization of Cantonese used in Hong Kong.
