Pinnacle Studio is a non-linear video editing software application manufactured by Pinnacle Systems. It is the consumer level counterpart to Pinnacle's professional level software, Liquid Edition. Studio allows users to author video content, create VCD/DVD's with menus and burn them without the need for any additional software.

Pinnacle also released a product called Studio Deluxe, which featured the Studio software, a Firewire PCI card with a breakout box featuring analog video inputs/outputs, as well as Hollywood FX Plus.

Since version 9, Studio has been sold in two editions: Studio and Studio Plus, with some additional functionality in the Plus edition. This software competes with other consumer video editors such as Adobe Premiere Elements. Pinnacle Studio may be purchased separately, but is also included in bundled packages which include video capture hardware. In addition, a cut-down SE version is included in OEQuickStart is included with the Pinnacle Dazzle product.

Pinnacle Studio QuickStart 9 has very basic video editing tools. For example:

  • DVDs are limited to a single menu featuring the title and chapters together.
  • Effects for audio and video are technically not available. Although a few video effects such as Fast/Slow Motion and Color Correction, and audio effects such as Graphic EQ and Reverb are available, the rest are all watermarked.
  • No motion buttons, no motion backgrounds and no motion menus for VCD authoring, and users are limited to create one page of VCD menu.

HollywoodFX Standard 5 (a package of audio and video effects) is included with Pinnacle Studio QuickStart 9.

Pinnacle Studio Plus 9 has all the video editing tools available on Pinnacle Studio 9, in addition to:

  • a version of HollywoodFX Plus 5.5
  • Video editing tools that are usually available on advanced video editing software such as two-tracks for video (A/B editing) and chroma key.

Studio 10 and Studio 10 Plus were released on the 17 August 2005. While retaining the same user interface as Studio 9, the code base was taken from Liquid Edition, now called Avid Liquid. Real time preview at full resolution was introduced along with the ability to mix PAL, NTSC, 4:3 and 16:9 footage on the timeline. The minimum hardware requirements were raised and the program currently only runs on Windows XP.

The standard version of Studio 10 has fewer features than the standard version of Studio 9, but Studio 10 Plus offers further enhancements including HD editing.

Early releases were criticized for crashing and running slowly [1] [2], but the current release, 10.7, has addressed many issues.

Studio 10.7 allows users (after purchasing a premium feature) to burn High Definition video to standard DVD media that will then replay on the Toshiba HD-DVD players.
