Pingus
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pingus is a free software computer game inspired by Lemmings and created by Ingo Ruhnke. It features penguins instead of lemmings, deliberately designed to resemble Tux, the Linux mascot (although the author has stated that the penguins are not actually Tux). It has been reviewed favorably by CNN.com [1], about.com [2], Unix Review [3] and other publications.
Work on the game began in 1998. This game is the first Game of the Month (GotM) by The Linux Game Tome, which has revamped such games as SuperTux, Super TuxKart, and Lincity. The first post-GotM version 0.6 was released in 2003 for GNU/Linux featuring new levels and a level editor.
As of 2006, Pingus has only 22 levels accessible from the GUI, all with a Winter theme. However, a level editor is included, and there are levels included with the game not accessible from its GUI, some with entirely different graphics.
The levels that exist are entirely playable, and the game features sound effects and music.
Pingus is not related to or inspired by Pingu.
[edit] Variants
In 2005, "Gallipoli: the game" was released. It is based on the Pingus code, and is supposed to be "a stunning recreation of Australia's greatest military adventure", the battle of Gallipoli. The game graphics have been modified (the penguins have been replaced by Australian soldiers) and the gameplay has been changed so that the goal is to exterminate as many soldiers as possible.
