Pigtail Ordinance

In 1873 the Pigtail Ordinance was passed in San Francisco, California. The new law forced Han Chinese prisoners to have their queue cut off. A queue is a waist-long, braided pigtail. The Chinese imperial government required Han men in China to wear the queue, to distinguish them from the ruling Manchus, and men who had their queues cut would have a hard time returning to China.
