[edit] Pigman Road: The Legend of the Pigman

[edit] The Setting

The legend takes place in Angola, NY, less than an hour south of Buffalo. Holland Road, formerly known as Pigman Road, runs about a mile through dense woods that cover the area for several square miles. The area is extremely isolated, and extremely forboding. The road is single-lane, very narrow, and features four railroad bridges that form tunnels through which the road passes. These tunnels play an important role in the lore surrounding the road.

[edit] The Legend

The legend tells of a farmer who lived alone on the road described above in the early 19th century (1800's), who was rather strange and mentally unstable. The farmer had a good deal of livestock and ample land to accommodate them, and he would eventually slaughter the livestock to sell and eat. He was extremely antisocial, and was extremely protective of his land which is where the eerie side of the legend comes into play. He would kill his pigs, and drive their heads onto stakes placed all around his property line so as to keep tresspassers out.

The legend now takes a violent and frightening turn. Three local boys, who were too curious for their own good, had strayed onto the farmer's estate, and fell victim to the farmer's wrath. He killed them, decapitated them, and hung their bodies by their feet from the first of the four rairoad bridges, and placed the heads of the boys on stakes next to the pigs on his front property line. The locals quickly learned of this and torturously killed the farmer, seized all of his land and assets, and left the farm abandoned to rot.

[edit] The Legacy

Thrill seekers often venture to Pigman Road, and have told stories of a creature half man, half pig, that walks the roads at night, and have described eerie and terrifying noises in the vicinity of the railroad bridges. Teenagers go to the bridges and taunt the Pigman, and expects their taunts to go unanswered. Their taunts are answered, relentlessly, haunting these people for weeks after they leave the site of the haunting.

That, my friends, is the legend of the Pigman, a haunting spirit who appears as a half-and-half creature, in a place that is extremely terrifying and dangerous. A restless spirit haunted by the killing of three boys and his own horrible death, and who has been angry for centuries, haunting those who taunt him.

[edit] The Disclaimer

Apparently local youths treat the haunting site as a hangout spot to drink, smoke, and commit other unlawful activities, and have reportedly harmed people who visit the road to participate in the legendary taunting of the Pigman. Thus, this road is not very safe, and I nor any of my sources condone visiting Holland Road or engaging in vigilante actions.

This topic isn't writtten about much, especially on the internet these days. It's maily spread through word of mouth, passed on in snippets and stories people tell one another about hearing about 'this Pigman thing', and it's tough to find out about the Pigman legend, so that's why I've decided to bring this to you. There's only one source than I can make reference to, so see the section below.

    [edit] The Local's Opinions

    • Hedk45e's Footnote- Being a resident of Angola, Ny for my 25 years, I have heard all there is to hear on this legend of pigman. Having traveled this dark and gloomy road many times, and heard stories from many of the older residents, as well as the young, alot of theories have come up.

Older members of the community know nothing of the story and grow upset with the rumors. Those who have lived here and who are now in their 70's would walk from areas to holland road, spend time there thruout their adolescense in the 1940's never had a problem, never heard a thing of pigman or this legend. I for one know that in the past 10 years, there has been no reported cases of the youth in the area harming anyone who comes to pigman road. This is a quiet, desolate road that in the past, my generation has used the mysteriousness and the legend to exploit peoples fears and party on the road from time to time.

Graffitti covers the tunnels, only 1 car wide, has been the site of a few accidents, tho not as of late. This story also coincides with the Great Train Wreck of Angola, NY, in the 1800's, where over 100 people died when the cars fell off the track and caught fire, near the site of the Nickel factory, about a mile from Holland Road.

Although the community says there is no such thing, that the story is spawned from the imaginations of children in the mid '70's, when the story began to spread by word of mouth, with minimal accounts or reports being filed about activity in the area, some do ask some weird questions.

Wether this is a tortured soul come back to haunt in a horrible body, a misidentified sasquatch sighting, a Reptillian species from underground tunnels unknown to the community, this area is ripe for investigation, and hopefully someday, someone might be able to help solve this eerie and frightening riddle.
