Pietro Candiano II

Pietro II Candiano, Doge of Venice, was born circa 872. He was the son of Pietro I Candiano, doge della Republic of Venice. He followed his father, Pietro Candiano I (887), Pietro Tribuno (888-912), and Orso Participazio II (912-932) to become Doge of Venice in 932. He began the Venician policy of expansion on the mainland after 932. He was 19th Doge of Venice between 932 and 939. Candian II began a bitter economic blockading war against Istria early in his rule. He burnt Venice's neighbor and potential rival, Comacchio to the ground following a trifling diplomatic incident.
