Piedras Negras is a city as well as its surrounding municipality in Coahuila, Mexico. It stands at the northeastern edge of Coahuila on the U.S.-Mexico border, across the Río Bravo (Rio Grande) from Eagle Pass in the U.S. state of Texas. In the 2005 census Piedras Negras had a population of 142,011 people, which was more than 98.6 percent of its municipality's population of 143,915. The municipality's area is relatively small, but does includes small outlying localities that are not in the city.

The city was founded in 1849. It was renamed Ciudad Porfirio Díaz in 1888, in homage to President Porfirio Díaz, but it reverted to its original name following the Mexican Revolution.

The Spanish words Piedras Negras translate as "black rocks" – a reference to the coal deposits that exist in the area. Across the river, coal was formerly mined on the US side at Dolchburg, near Eagle Pass, in a mine that closed around 1905 after a fire. Mexico currently operates 2 large coal-fired power plants named "José López Portillo" and "Carbón 2" 30 miles south of Piedras Negras.

[edit] History

On June 15, 1850, a group of 34 men commanded by Andrés Zapata, Gaspar Salazar and Antonio Ramírez met with Colonel Juan Manuel Maldonado to inform him that they had formed a point of pass in Piedras Negras, to the right of the Rio Grande, south of Fort Duncan naming it Nueva Villa de Herrera, which was later renamed Villa de Piedras Negras.

In 1881 the construction of the railroad was started due to the discovery of great deposits of coal in the region, this was finished until 1883. With the construction of the railroad the regional economy was boosted and on December 1, 1888, it is granted the status of city this time with the name of "City of Porfirio Díaz".
