Pidie Regency is bordered with Malacca Strait in the north, Aceh Besar in the west, Bireuen in the east, and Aceh Jaya in the south. Its inhabitants are fond of travelling and trading, thus often called "The Black Chinese" and along with people from Bireuen they dominate various markets in Aceh. Beside that, this regency is famous for its famous people, such as Teungku Daud Beureueh, Mr. Teuku Mohammad Hasan, Prof. Ibrahim Hasan, Dr. Hasballah M. Saad, and entrepreneur Ibrahim Risyad (Richard).
Previously Pidie was Sultanate of Pedir different from Aceh, thus until now Pidie has never been called Aceh Pidie (Pidie Aceh), but only Pidie. When a confrontation occurred with Portugal, the Sultanate of Pedir joined with Sultanate of Aceh against the Portuguese. This regency is the pioneer of Gerakan Aceh Merdeka led by Hasan di Tiro currently living in Sweden. Surprisingly, the riots usually occur in its neighboring that Pidie itself.
Since Military Emergency May 2003, the social and economic activity of this regency have not fully been recovered. There are some subdistricts claiming a new regency, Pidie Jaya based in Meureudu, eastern Pidie.
