[edit] Deletion
This temaplate is designed so as to get immediate access to all the branches of Physics. The branches are classified in a regular order. Why is it proposed for deletion? It is found to be very much useful. Almost all areas of Physics are covered in a single box. Why dont you understand its use. The suggestions for debate, deletion etc. make some new editors confused and they delete it from the main pages. Please leave this template Physics series as such. Instead you can delet Physics subjects since it is not in use
no need of much debates. let this template as such. it is very useful.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 202.88.236.202 (talk • contribs) .
- The discussion on whether to delete this article is going on at Wikipedia:Templates for deletion#Template:Physics Series. You need to raise your concerns there, not here. The purpose of the TfD tag you keep deleting is to point people to that page, where deletion of the template is being discussed. Do not remove the tfd tag until the discussion is complete. Repeatedly removing tfd tags is considered vandalism.--Srleffler 11:01, 12 June 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Useful Template
This template is found to be very useful for Physics students. It provides immediate access to all branches of Physics. You can make necessary corrections in the template. But dont delete it. The physics portal is not useful for such a purpose. it covers the subject only in general.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 202.88.236.202 (talk • contribs) .
- Please sign your talk page messages. You can do that by putting four tildes (~~~~) at the end. The wiki replaces this with your userid or ip address and the time the message was posted.--Srleffler 11:47, 12 June 2006 (UTC)
The template is much too big to appear at the top right of an article. It interferes with the layout, and in some cases, the template is larger than the articles to which it is applied. It also prevents articles from leading off with a nice picture. The current guidelines recommend that articles should have an attractive and informative picture in the top right corner wherever possible. More important than any of these concerns, though, is that trying to link large subject areas together into a "series" is inherently a bad idea. It doesn't suit the way information is organized, or the way Wikipedia works. Subject areas overlap. Electronics is a good example. This physics series template was applied to that page, because somebody felt that electronics should be considered part of physics. But electronics is also part of engineering. Furthermore, not that long ago electronics had its own series box, much like the one we are discussing. Optics has similar issues. Optics articles in general are as much engineering as physics, and depending on the specific article may also be photography or astronomy related (or both). You can't break down knowledge and categorize it the way you are trying to do. There is too much overlap. This is what the Wikipedia category system is for. Portals like portal:physics are a better way to organize the articles on a subject area to allow convenient browsing. That's what the portals are for. If you don't like the way the physics portal is set up now, change it.
Finally, this approach to organizing information on Wikipedia has been proposed before, and rejected. See for example Wikipedia:Branchlist and the related discussion at Wikipedia:Root page. Check both the main pages and the talk pages for those proposals. For the root page proposal, go back through the discussion in the archives, if you want to get a clear picture of why this kind of navigation tool is being opposed.--Srleffler 12:01, 12 June 2006 (UTC)
