Phoenix Lord

Phoenix Lords are the greatest warriors of the Eldar in the fictional universe of Warhammer 40,000. Each of them founded one of the aspect shrines of the Eldar, and are the embodiment of that aspect. They have transcended the bounds of normal mortality, in a fashion. The spirit of the original Phoenix Lords was infused into their armour, and merges with the current wearer of the armour. When the Phoenix Lord falls in combat, another will don the armour and assume the memories and abilities of the Phoenix Lord. However, many believe that the Phoenix Lords are animated suits of armour possessed by the spirits of dead Exarchs of that Aspect. This theory flies in the face of the Soul Stone technology, which the Codex: Eldar says all Eldar wear on their chest.

The known Phoenix Lords are:

• Asurmen The Hand of Asuryan. "The Eldar Believe that Asurmen was the first of the Phoenix Lords. He was the founder of the Shrine of Asur, which has grown into the most widespread of all Aspects - The Dire Avengers."1
• Maugan-Ra The Harvester of Souls, who founded the Dark Reapers shrine. He came to the Ulthwe Craftworld during the 13th Black Crusade.
• Jain Zar The Storm of Silence. "Jain Zar is the Phoenix Lord of the Howling Banshees Aspect warriors. She is the most swift and ferocious of the Phoenix Lords. Jain Zar has travelled widely across the webway, and so it is that the Howling Banshees can be found on all but the remotest craftworld."1
• Baharroth The Cry of the Wind. "Baharroth is believed to be the finest pupil of Asurmen. He was the winged Phoenix and founder of the Swooping Hawk Aspect. "1
• Fuegan The Burning Lance. "Fuegan is the founder of the Fire Dragons Shrine, teaching the art of death through flame and fire. "1
• Karandras The Shadow Hunter. "No one knows where Karandras originally came from, but it is known that he was not the first Exarch of the Striking Scorpions."1 He is the only Phoenix Lord that did not found his shrine. It is thought that the original founder went over to the Dark Eldar and founded the Incubi.
