[edit] Surname
Besides the obvious ("Vera Cruz" is not only the name of a city (maybe several) but also means "True Cross", as in "This sliver of wood is an authentic holy relic, a fragment of the True Cross."), the first evidence i found that bears on his surname is [1], which repeatedly uses the two words as his surname in subsequent references. I'm changing the piping of his Cats accordingly.
