Philips GoGear

Philips GoGear is a series of small flash memory-based and hard drive based personal electronic devices from manufacturer Philips. The line includes digital cameras, mp3 players, and audio recorders. The GoGear line is named for the size of its products, all of which are quite tiny and, as a result, very portable. The mp3 players are primarily designed to compete with the iPod series of portable music devices.

The GoGear HDD0xx series of mp3 players maintain an internal SQLite database of ID3 tags of all MP3 files on the device. This database is used by the device interface software to display a tree-structured menu of tracks to select from, but the device itself does not generate the database. Rather, the software products that Philips recommends using, which include Musicmatch and are only available on Windows XP, generate the database whenever files are transferred to the device. Apart from this one anomaly, the GoGear does comply with the USB Mass Storage Device standard and can be used in combination with software other than what Philips distribute, provided that the user use a third-party tool to generate the tags database.
