Philippe Jacottet was born in 1925 in Moudon, Switzerland.

After literary studies in Lausanne he lived in Paris where he worked for the publisher Mermod and was poetry critic for Nouvelle Revue Française. He married in 1953 and moved to Grignan, in the Drôme, just north of Provence, where he remains. As well as original poetry and prose, he has published French translations of Friedrich Hölderlin, Rainer Maria Rilke, Giuseppe Ungaretti and Robert Musil. In 2004 he won the Goncourt-Adrien Bertrand prize for his work.
