Philipp Scharwenka

Ludwig Philipp Scharwenka (February 16, 1847, Samter, near PosenJuly 16, 1917, Bad Nauheim) was a Polish-German composer. He was the older brother of Xaver Scharwenka.

He was born in Samter, Posen (now Szamotuly, Poznan) in Prussia (now Poland). He moved to Berlin in 1865. Many of the major conductors of the period, including Arthur Nikisch and Hans Richter, performed his orchestral works. However, he is best known for his chamber works, including two piano trios, two trios for violin, viola, and piano, two violin sonatas, one viola sonata, two string quartets, and two piano quintets. Philipp was married to violin virtuoso Marianne Scharwenka.

Otto Klemperer studied with him in Berlin.
