Philip Carden Thornalley (born January 5, 1960 in Worlington, Suffolk, England) is a songwriter-producer and occasional bassist and vocalist who has worked in the music industry since 1978. Best known for the co-writing (with Scott Cutler and Anne Previn) and producing the song "Torn" for Natalie Imbruglia, and for her debut album, Left of the Middle.

Thornalley began working as a recording engineer in 1978, at RAK Studios in St. John's Wood, London for producer Mickie Most (Hot Chocolate, Kim Wilde, Chris Spedding and Racey). He also worked with producer Steve Lillywhite (Psychedelic Furs and Thompson Twins).

Based on his engineering work with the Psychedelic Furs, Thornalley became the producer for The Cure on their fourth album, Pornography. After Simon Gallup quit in 1982, he filled in as their bassist during the recording of Japanese Whispers and their first live album, Concert but was eventually fired for playing too many "off the wall" improvisations.

In 1984 he was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical for Into the Gap by the Thompson Twins.

Thornalley has worked as a mixing engineer for Duran Duran, XTC, Sting, Ash and Cyndi Lauper. He also produced Prefab Sprout, Orange Juice and Seona Dancing, and co-produced Robbie Nevil alongside mentor and friend Alex Sadkin. They produced the international hit "C'est La Vie" in 1986.

He then made albums as a singer-songwriter ("Swamp") and as a member of Johnny Hates Jazz.

Since then Thornalley has worked primarily as songwriter and record producer for other artists, including Bryan Adams, Melanie C, Ronan Keating, BBMac, Mattafix, Holly Vallance, Shannon Noll and Brian McFadden.
