[edit] New York Times

It's free ? The news articles are all trapped behind a registration page. Not free enough for me. :-) Thanks for telling, but I'll pass the registration. I'll never remember my passwords..... -- PFHLai 07:12, 2005 August 6 (UTC)

I often use semi-public machines. Cookies won't help much. Thanks, anyway. :-) -- PFHLai 07:30, 2005 August 6 (UTC)

[edit] Spotteddogsdotorg

I have no idea what you're talking about. Your account is less than a half hour old, so I can't say anything about any alleged previous interaction between you and Spotteddogsdotorg. The reason Spotteddogsdotorg was banned has nothing to do with your brand-new account; the reason was continuous vandalism, which Spotteddogsdotorg never gave up on.--Pharos 18:49, 31 July 2005 (UTC)

I hacked Spotteddogsdotorg account after he was mean to me on the televison news talk board. He had a very easy password that I was able to get. He promised to send me an old WCAU tape because my mother left me and I wanted to remember, but he did not. I then made all sorts of vandalisms using his name and a anonomus proxy software to get my revenge on him. He has also made fun of me there and has been really mean to me. You should not be mean to people that have had their mother left them. I think the revenge has ended now, but the people on the televison news talk board said I am crazy and was going to kill myself. I am not going to do either and I have given up on the televison news talk board since they are mean people who think I am crazy and have nothing to contribute. I showed that mean person that they are useless since they got screwed up here. Those people think I am crazy but I am not. I tried to hack Spotteddogsdotorg's website but he banned me. So I made it so I could screw with his preciuous Wikipedia. That is what you get when your mother leaves you. If you have any old WCAU newscasts when they were CBS please talk to me. Ever since my mother left I have wanted to relive those days. MrPhillyTV 17:23, 6 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Spelling error in news section on Main Page

Hi,

There is a spelling error in the news section, should be spelt "international". Cheers.

=Travisyoung= 04:27, 7 August 2005 (UTC)

  • Fixed. Of course, when I make a mistake it's not a spelling error, it's a typo :)--Pharos 04:31, 7 August 2005 (UTC)

Hey thanks for the speedy correction, it was still wrong, but another admin fixed it. Thanks! =Travisyoung= 04:39, 7 August 2005 (UTC)

  • And darn it all, I do very well know how to spell "international"!:) Sometimes my fingers are a little clumsy though...--Pharos 04:44, 7 August 2005 (UTC)

No problem man, nice pics you have in your user pages! :) =Travisyoung= 04:45, 7 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] DYK image

Alt text remains from previous image. :) — Pekinensis 23:08, 7 August 2005 (UTC)

  • Thanks for pointing out the caption issue; one always forgets it because it's not immediately visible.--Pharos 23:16, 7 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Image use on MainPage

Hello, Pharos. I got this question on my talk page. Do you have a good answer ? I don't think my response on User talk:Zzyzx11 is good enough an answer.

Based on your recent edit [1], I am curious: where does it say that the image on Template:In the news has to be a PD one and not a fair use one? Zzyzx11 (Talk) 04:26, 8 August 2005 (UTC)
As far as I know, Template talk:In the news#Copyrighted images says, "Before placing an image in the template, ensure that its copyright is well-documented and that it is legal for it to be displayed on the Wikipedia." So why wasn't Image:Peterjenningspic.jpg well documented? (Even though Pharos eventually found a PD image of him at Image:Peter Jennings.jpg, could you please answer my question anyway?) Thanks. Zzyzx11 (Talk) 04:36, 8 August 2005 (UTC)

Thanks. -- PFHLai 04:44, 2005 August 8 (UTC)

  • Yes, can you please tell me where I can find out why it is more preferable to have a PD or GDFL image on the main page than a fair use one? Thanks. Zzyzx11 (Talk) 04:52, 8 August 2005 (UTC)
    • Ideally, I would like to know where those specific discussions are. Then, I can put a link to it on the various relevant pages so other admins will also know about the issues of putting fair use images on the main page too. Zzyzx11 (Talk) 05:06, 8 August 2005 (UTC)
      • Well, it's preferable because it's a free encyclopedia, and our face to the world (the Main Page) should be absolutely free to exemplify this. As to policy, this is something I was informed of as a young admin in the halcyon days of late 2004, but I can't seem to find a policy page that explains this explicitly. I think we may have to go to Jimbo on this one.--Pharos 05:14, 8 August 2005 (UTC)
        • The problem is that an image might not even _be_ fair use on the main page. Fair use is very difficult to assess, and it is perfectly possible that an image is OK to use in an article about its subject, but not next to a one-line blurb on the main page. — David Remahl 05:19, 8 August 2005 (UTC)
I've started a discussion at Talk:Main Page#Image use on MainPage. Wanna share your thoughts ? -- PFHLai 13:11, 2005 August 8 (UTC)

[edit] Hi its me again!

How are you doing? Its me, Rainbowwarrior1977. We have talked last month about me doing some constructive work on here and I have regarding the articles. However, some angry people have started an RfC [here]about me. I was hoping you could take a look at it, as you already know that I was Musachachado (I told you as soon as I created this account) and that I have done valid editing on articles since then under this account. Hope everything is going ok. Rainbowwarrior1977 05:06, 9 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Template:C-uploaded

Thank you for covering for me at Image:Fahd bin Abdul Aziz.jpg. I should have gone back and fixed it. I didn't get it the first time I saw that. Now I understand. It was a neat idea. Did you create the template ? Its history says so. -- PFHLai 00:11, 2005 August 11 (UTC)

  • Yeah, I created it because with more images being moved to Commons we were becoming more vulnerable to vandalism, and Commons admins are not so easy to get ahold of at quick notice. There were recommendations for temporarily uploading images locally, but it wasn't really being done, and so I created c-uploaded to formalize the process and make it easier to find and delete the images once they are off the main page.--Pharos 00:18, 11 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Tzadik

I have moved the page as per your suggestion. I hope to write this article within the next week or so. --Eliezer | £€åV€ m€ å m€§§åg€ 02:50, 11 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use image on Template:In the news

Fair use images have frequently been used on this template, and if the policy has changed recently, could you show me the source? In the meantime, I have restored the image, but will remove it if you can show me some official policy against it. At any rate, I don't see how it can be okay in an article, but not okay in this template, as long as the person inserting it (in this case, me) asserts that it complies with the fairuse regulations. [edit] User:Pharos/List of political party ballot symbols by U.S. state

Is a pentagram really the symbol of New York Democratic Party? Could you perhaps link to a picture of this being used? Thanks in advance. ;-) --Revolución (talk) 21:36, 14 August 2005 (UTC)

  • No :), it's a five-pointed star. Unfortunately, this is the only article we have on five-pointed stars. The symbol of the Right to Life Party is really a fetus though; it appears right on the ballot.--Pharos 21:49, 14 August 2005 (UTC)
    • Ok, I had thought you meant a pentagram because it linked to the article on pentagrams, but now I see it's just a five-pointed star. Thanks for clearing that up. ;-) --Revolución (talk) 21:52, 14 August 2005 (UTC)
A pentagram is a five-pointed star. The symbol used in magic which has a pentagram inside a circle is often called a pentacle, but pentacle can also refer to the simple five-pointed star as well. -Harmil 14:58, 22 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Today's second feature

Hi Pharos. I've tagged Wikipedia:Today's second feature/August 15, 2005 for speedy deletion, though I invite you to actually delete it. Note that it isn't used on the Main Page, or anywhere else. dbenbenn | talk 04:14, 15 August 2005 (UTC)

  • Thanks; I've deleted it.--Pharos 04:32, 15 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Tzadik

Please see the page that I made for Tzadik and my comments to the talk page of chabad regarding ther merging of the section "Relationship between God, the Rebbe and his followers" into Tzadik. Thanks. --Eliezer | £€åV€ m€ å m€§§åg€ 04:20, 16 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Image

Yeah, sorry about that. Slipped my mind. Usually I'm the one protecting and unprotecting when others forgot. :) --Golbez 02:02, August 18, 2005 (UTC)

Good thing I was already doing that when you reverted. --Golbez 19:28, August 27, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] President of Singapore main page

I removed it from the main page template, because it's a mostly ceremonial post (nearly all power de jure and essentially all power de facto is in the hands of the PM), and the absence of an election for this post is not really a significant news item for the main page. -- Curps 04:24, 18 August 2005 (UTC)
