[edit] Alignment
Yes. I'm in the latest Firefox. I don't remember if I checked it in IE too. It definitely looks different. I don't know why. I'll have to check the HTML code that it puts out. — BRIAN0918 • 2006-06-14 02:56
[edit] Thanks for the cats! {**purrrrrrr**}
Oh, it's so nice to see someone helping with (or even evidence of having looked at :-) the rather rudimentary new page I put up yesterday. It was made more difficult by the fact that I only had the Hebrew edition at hand, which meant I had to translate or transliterate everything, besides confirming names (people, institutions) for internal links. Still, it was worth it -- I'd just gotten so tired of seeing the Encyclopaedia of the Holocaust as a redlink every time I typed it in a reference or "further reading" citation. Next week at the library, I'll fill in what's missing.
Meanwhile, I really appreciate your adding categories. That's something with which I have, as yet, only limited familiarity. Something else for my "Wikipedia Editing 101" list... Thanks! -- Deborahjay 13:45, 16 June 2006 (UTC)
[edit] New York towns
How do you suggest sorting out [1] and all the similar pages? --SPUI (T - C) 07:02, 19 June 2006 (UTC)
Great job misrepresenting my position - I'm not saying we should "pretend the towns and villages are the same thing". I think the articles should start off "Foo is a town in New York, containing a village with the same name." There would be a section about the census stats, separated by town and village. There would be general information about the town and village, some talking about both and some about one or the other.
A possible alternate solution would be to move the village to the undisambiguated title, as it is typically the center of population of the town. Then we at least have a default to link to. But the current "solution" just doesn't work. --SPUI (T - C) 07:20, 19 June 2006 (UTC)
However, the village is a lot smaller in area and has a defined "town center". Is there a New York WikiProject? --SPUI (T - C) 08:16, 19 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Merge of Kristian Menchaca and Thomas Lowell Tucker
Hey Pharos, just wanted to ask for your clarification on Talk:Kristian Menchaca. You said Yes, I see now reason they shouldn't be merged into Kristian Menchaca and Thomas Lowell Tucker. Did you mean "I see no reason"? "Now" instead of "no" seems to change the meaning of the sentence, so I wanted to be clear. Thanks! TomTheHand 13:46, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

Hi. I have tagged the following photos as no source:
- Image:Grand Army Plaza Victory.jpg
- Image:Grand Army Plaza Herald.jpg
- Image:Image-Grand Army Plaza Herald experimental.jpg
- Image:Image-Grand Army Plaza Herald 2.jpg
Unless the artist has been dead for 70 years, one may not photograph a piece of art and use a free license. Please see Commons:Derivative works. Do you know the name (or the date of death) of the artist? Kjetil_r 02:08, 28 June 2006 (UTC)
- Hi again, I notice that you have removed the “no source” templates. You write that thay are “public monuments”, but AFAIK, the US copyright law only divides between architecture and art. Public architecture is ok to photograph, public art is not (there are many pieces of public art in the US up for deletion now at COM:DEL, see also User:Alx/Sandbox#USA). I can agree to that The Unisphere may be architecture and thus ok, but these four images can not IMO be called architecture.
- You also write that “nothing created before 1923 in the US is copyrighted” - if so, you should anyway state the name of the artist and the year that the statue was created. Kjetil_r 13:04, 28 June 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Belt regions of the United States
Do you have sources for your rewrite of the intro, specifically the part saying that the usage was first for agrictulre (e.g., cotton belt) rather than sociological (e.g., Bible belt)? I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just curious about what historian might have studied this. - DavidWBrooks 14:10, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Orphaned fair use image (Image:Populist Party of Maryland.jpg)
|
Thanks for uploading Image:Populist Party of Maryland.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently specifies that the image can be used under a fair use license. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. —Bkell (talk) 01:25, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Giovanni da Verrazzzzzzano
The problem is that "Verrazano" is wrong, and sounds ridiculous to an Italian... and Verrazzano was Italian, isn't he? Shakespeare was called "Scespirio" in Italy some times ago, but nobody uses this forms today.... Probably the article must be moved to Giovanni da Verrazzano. Please don't remove the redirects I've done. Let me know and good work! --Attilios 09:00, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
-
- What is you say is reasonable. But I've found THE source that will definitively confirm my view... if you check Encyclopedia Britannica, you will find the navigator called exactly as Giovanni da Verrazzano, while the bridge is effectively cited as Verrazano. So probably the form by which he is best known is one, but the correct one is different also in English. Let me know. --Attilios 09:10, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
- This Encyclopedia is written in English, but it is not the Encyclopedia of English-speaking people. That's a subtle difference... "Verazano" may be the most common variant for people of English mother tongue (but I doubt that is true only for US-Canada people who knows the famous bridge), but for ALL other users in the world using this encyclopedia as reference we must give them the "correct" version. --Attilios 10:04, 4 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Unspecified source for Image:Pharos of Alexandria1.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Pharos of Alexandria1.jpg. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be a justification explaining why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.
If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{fairusein|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. BigDT 00:56, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Stub articles on ITN
There is no criteria against stub articles on ITN. The article will grow quickly enough once it has been linked from the main page. Thue | talk 10:51, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
- Articles are required to have a substantial update. One sentence is not a substantial update. Believe me, if it's a major event, the article will grow on its own. We shouldn't show it off too early; the Main Page is not meant to be a sandbox.--Pharos 10:54, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
-
- Actually, I don't believe that. I have seen many worthy news items, such as natural disasters killing thousands in 3rd world countries, not having articles, or having only stub articles. I think using ITN to kickstart such articles is reasonable; WIkipedia is a work in progress, and IMO ITN can reflect that. Thue | talk 11:01, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Re: Patriarchate copyrights
In the article about the Ecumenical Patriarch in the Greek wikipedia. These images can be used as long as u mention the source, as said here. The translation from Greeks is: The image is copurighted, but the copyright holder allows the usage of this image as long as the source is mentioned. Thus, I hope I have not violated any wikirule. I am not very much aware in uploading images. If there is something else u want to ask me to do about it, let me know. Regards Hectorian 22:17, 27 January 2007 (UTC)
Last November, Pope met with the Patriarch in Istanbul. The Press Offices of Vatican and Ecumenical Patriarchate had created the site www.patriarchate.org with images, texts, sound and video from the historical meeting. The photos you mentioned have been copied from that site, which unfortunately is no longer on-line. I really do not know what happens with copyright in these cases. In any case, when these photos were uploaded, the specific web site allowed free use with attribution. Please let me know what can be done in this case...--Kostisl 00:03, 28 January 2007 (UTC)
I am afraid the site is different from the one at the previous address (www.patriarchate.org). I can now only find a "public gallery" (http://www.ecupatriarchate.org/gallery/main.php), which nevertheless does not mention anything about copyright. --Kostisl 13:09, 28 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Vote registration
I didn't understand what voter registration would achieve. But as I learned some more I now understand that at least in USA you become able to vote and so on in the party itself. I don't know if I missed it last time. But I didn't see the point of why one would register. In Sweden we join the party itself seperate from any official government intervention because the government shouldn't know my political thoughts which they could prosecute you by. Seems everything is explained in the article, dunno what I was thinking. Lord Metroid 09:31, 28 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] thanks for your suggestion
about the animal sacrifice photo. I understand the objections to it staying where it is and really only began this tempest in a teapot because I'm sick and bored and feeling irritated. I am satisfied myself as to what I found. I think removing it would be wikipedia's loss, but that's okay too. Things come and things go. The woman with me at the time has had a fait amount of experience in the darker side of things and imediately knew/felt that it was a sacrifice scene. Perhaps you had to be there. Anyway, here is a picture of the rock painting that was looking down at all of us. Remember that this spot is . . .nowhere, on the way to nowhere. I discovered it because I was searching for petroglyphs and using line of sight navigation to reach the top of a nearby high hill. There are no paths out there. Anyway, nice to meet you, Pharos. [edit] Please Alphabetize Names
Hello -- you recently fixed the Ashkenazi-centric portriat collage on the Jew article. However, I am now wondering if you could please put the names in alphabetical order by last name. I've tried to figure out how I could do it myself, but I cannot figure out how to reorder to the photos. In the interest of fairness please do this. Thanks. --172.161.208.143 02:11, 18 February 2007 (UTC)
- You need a user account to upload images. The rest of my reply is at Talk:Jew.--Pharos 02:30, 18 February 2007 (UTC)

- I don't think that "aesthetics" or "visual balance" really matters much with such a low-resolution/grainy image. In this collage the women are still placed behind the men in the portrait; it's always best to alphabetize names in the interest of fairness and NPOV. --172.132.31.106 04:47, 20 February 2007 (UTC)

- What do you think about my edits to Image:3c22206t.gif and Image:21056r.jpg? I replaced Template:Library_of_Congress with Template:LOC-image + Template:Fairusein. The problem that I realized afterwards is that whatever category Template:LOC-image dumped to would need to have a _ NOGALLERY _ tag exactly because of those two images (or more, if we tagged more copyright images with LOC-image). It is frustrating. --Iamunknown 05:38, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

- It's a variation of the same song/tune. What's in the link you gave me was just the introduction, though, I haven't been able to find an image of the actual verses, although that would make a good illustration. The accompaniment I did was just chords based on the chords given in the version you sent me. I think I'll try another version this afternoon, but if I don't upload it by tonight (EST) go ahead and do DYK. Cheers, Mak (talk) 18:01, 4 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Andrew Jackson
I placed a Request for Protection regarding the Andrew Jackson page in the appropriate forum. I'd ask that you take another look, and reconsider your very recent unprotect, as it's quite apparent that the vandals were simply "waiting in the weeds" for this article to be unprotected. The most recent vandalism was done in stages, and was rather complicated to undo. It would be simpler just to leave the protection on the article, as it would allow us to identify the vandals, and would probably decrease vandalism to almost nil on the article.K.
