[edit] Storyline
In Phantasy Star Online Episodes I and II, the space station Pioneer 2 made its way to the uninhabited planet Ragol in hopes of colonization to replace their failing home planet Coral. In Episode III, they still have not begun colonization. This is due to the inner strife of the government of Pioneer 2, which has since gained independence from Coral in addition to beginning it's overzealous uprooting of the planet's resources to exploit "the germ" a mysterious substance discovered on the planet which they use to power their newly developed "C.A.R.D. technology". The "Heroside" are government-chosen officials who take orders from the government to explore, research, and capture the Arkz, an anti-government faction. The "Darkside" are a team of the Arkz, founded by a man known only as "Red" who try to intercept and destroy the government's plans for the overdevelopment of the planet. They also oppose the use of C.A.R.D. technology due to its unpredictabilty and how little is still known of it, but only use a stolen version of the technology themselves to be able to compete with Heroside.
[edit] Gameplay
Games are played either against computer players, or players against one another. In storyline mode, the player plays against the opposite side they've chosen. There are secrets to be revealed in between battles pertaining to the goals of the group, and also, the personalities of the characters themselves. The player plays as a commander they customize themselves and each match represents a deployment of one of the twelve characters one each of the sides. Games are played on a grid, with chosen characters on a square. Heroside must use cards in a deck the player has customized to fight. Each card represents a weapon, shield, mag, attack power or technique from episodes I and II. They equip these items to themselves within a limit and attack monsters and players with them. Darkside have cards in a deck that represent monsters, attack powers, and techniques from episodes I and II. Both sides can use defense cards to intercept attacks, and players and monsters may be moved around to adjoining squares.
