Pgrep

The correct title of this article is pgrep. The initial letter is shown capitalized due to technical restrictions.

pgrep is a command line utility initially written for use with the Solaris 7 operating systems and then ported to GNU/Linux. It searches for all the named processes, that can be specified as ERE patterns, and, by default, returns their ID. The equivalent Linux command is pidof.

Common use:

$ pgrep <option> processname ...

Some usage examples:

Show all process (in long form, ID and name) belonging to the other group

$ pgrep -l -G other

Show all process not belonging to root user

pgrep -v -u root
