[edit] Cowboy Up!
Hi, just to let you know that a user who was rather rude to you has a new name just in case you run into him again! He's a real piece of work - good luck. Here's where you met:User:RJSampson Dwain 23:28, Jun 26, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] New York Times
Actually the New York Times is free online, you just have to register. It's not free for older articles, though.--Pharos 07:02, 6 August 2005 (UTC)
- If you regularly use the same computer it's just cookied there, so you won't have to enter it again.--Pharos 07:17, 6 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Featured Picture
Thanks for your help with the FeaturedPicture on the MainPage this morning. Do you know what the problem was? I assumed I must have forgotten to protect the template, but the Protection log suggests that I had protected the page on the 5th. Did I miss something else, or do protections just go AWOL occaisionally. -- Solipsist 19:15, 7 August 2005 (UTC)
- BTW - the wording on Wikipedia:Selected_anniversaries/August_9 looks good to me. It would be quite nice to mention that it was the second and last time a nuclear weapon was used, but I can't find a way to phrase it concisely. -- Solipsist 19:23, 7 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Template:In the news
Based on your recent edit [1], I am curious: where does it say that the image on Template:In the news has to be a PD one and not a fair use one? Zzyzx11 (Talk) 04:26, 8 August 2005 (UTC)
- As far as I know, Template talk:In the news#Copyrighted images says, "Before placing an image in the template, ensure that its copyright is well-documented and that it is legal for it to be displayed on the Wikipedia." So why wasn't Image:Peterjenningspic.jpg well documented? (Even though Pharos eventually found a PD image of him at Image:Peter Jennings.jpg, could you please answer my question anyway?) Thanks. Zzyzx11 (Talk) 04:36, 8 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] American Old West at the US Collaboration
Some time ago, you supported the nomination of American Old West at the COTW. I have now renominated it at the new US Collaboration. If you are still interested, you can support the article with your vote there!--Fenice 08:57, 10 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Template:C-uploaded
Please don't remove this template when an image is off the Main Page. Instead, speedy delete it per instructions (which is the whole point), provided it isn't likely it could go back on the main page soon.--Pharos 17:31, 10 August 2005 (UTC)
- Ah, I see you understand it now and are using it yourself. I was looking at Image:Fahd bin Abdul Aziz.jpg, from which you removed the C-uploaded template on August 3 and which I just deleted. Thanks for using the C-uploaded system comprehensively more recently; I think it's really protecting us against vandalism.--Pharos 17:44, 10 August 2005 (UTC)--Pharos 17:44, 10 August 2005 (UTC)
- Yeah, I created it because with more images being moved to Commons we were becoming more vulnerable to vandalism, and Commons admins are not so easy to get ahold of at quick notice. There were recommendations for temporarily uploading images locally, but it wasn't really being done, and so I created c-uploaded to formalize the process and make it easier to find and delete the images once they are off the main page.--Pharos 00:20, 11 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Today's second feature
Hi PFH,
If you get a chance, can you check the trail of protected items in Wikipedia:Today's second feature for the 13th and 14th. I've the first time I've handled the protection on the Commons items too, so I will ask someone over there to check that part. Thanks -- Solipsist 20:13, 12 August 2005 (UTC)
- They seem fine. I tried but couldn't make any edit unless I sign in. I assume non-admins can't do anything besides viewing. Hope this helps.
- BTW, how about using Template:C-uploaded ? This way, we don't have to wait for admins at the WCommons to protect images from that end. We can upload and protect images locally in English Wikipedia. -- PFHLai 18:41, 2005 August 13 (UTC)
- Thanks, I wasn't aware of the {{C-uploaded}} template - it looks useful. In fact I've recently become an admin on Commons to handling protecting images sourced from there when doing the featured picture thing. Still, I do a fair bit of picture work anyway, so it will probably be useful for other reasons. -- Solipsist 19:12, 13 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] C-uploaded
Um, surely the c-uploaded template should remain until the image is deleted by an admin (as I have now done). Why did you revert? ed g2s • talk 20:17, 22 August 2005 (UTC)
- I wasn't comfortable with deleting images that weren't really uploaded for the MainPage. That pic of the America's Cup was already in English Wikipedia when I put on the Mprotection. I don't want to mess up the upload history and other attributions. You're an admin at the Commons. Please fix as necessary. I have to defer this to someone like you 'coz I don't want to mess things up. I have found other images moved to the WCommons without the upload history and I don't think this is right. -- PFHLai 20:28, 2005 August 22 (UTC)
[edit] Response to your post on my talk page (User talk:67.122.75.222)
The article was Wikipedia, and I was offering a suggestion on how to improve Wikipedia in general, and even though the comments may have been in the wrong place, not everyone spends have of their life learning every little tool and function in this Encyclopedia. As for the personal attacks? Yes, I admit it my my wrong doing and against the rules. However, I would not call it vandalism like you decided to portray it as being, because my intent was not to cause chaos, but merely to offer a suggestion to make this Encyclopedia more desirable, which is why I made my comments in the "Discussion" section rather than in the article simply for other people to see which would go against the neutral point of view policy.

[edit] PNG -> png
Yes, that's a annoying bug and it's confused me terribly every one of the several times I've encountered it. It's too bad the software doesn't recognize ".png" and ".PNG" or ".jpg" and ".JPG" files as the same; we're rather vulnerable whenever someone makes a small mistake on this.--Pharos 17:10, 24 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Current events
I think I understand why you blanked out the Robertson item added by an anon. user on Current events, but I don't think it's helpful to newbies who don't know enough to read your edit summaries. Don't bite the newbies while they are still typing. They wouldn't even know what they did wrong. I added the "Newslink Missing" tag to help out, hoping to show the way. Now, I've restored the news item added a newslink, too. However, I do suggest blanking out unsourced item clearly left unattended on Current events. -- PFHLai 23:38, 2005 August 24 (UTC)
- Perhaps I was a little gruff, but keep in mind that current events is one of those high profile pages on wikipedia, so if we don't source there, even for a few minutes it is sending a pretty bad (and confusing) message. Actually, I'm not even sure current events belongs on Wikipedia, but that's a story for another day. --fvw* 23:44, August 24, 2005 (UTC)
- I see that we are on the same team. :-) Just that I prefer being more gentle to newbies with just a handful of edits under his/her IP. TakeCare.-- PFHLai 23:54, 2005 August 24 (UTC)

- In the South, it is on 26th, I think. For me in Chennai, the holiday is tomorrow. Tintin 06:45, 25 August 2005 (UTC)

- Regional differences I guess. 26 in Tamil Nadu, 27 in Maharashtra and Gujarat. How about putting it on both days to be accurate and not favour one over the other? User:Nichalp/sg 07:07, August 25, 2005 (UTC)
- I have added the dates. Not sure whether it is in the right section. Tintin 07:28, 25 August 2005 (UTC)
Btw, the link in Hinduism is to Krishna Janmaashtami which is the same thing, while we also have Janmashtami Tintin 07:40, 25 August 2005 (UTC)
Both are about the same festival. Very interestingly, Krishna Janmaashtami gives a South Indian version. 'little feet drawn with flour paste' afaik, is done only in the South. Likewise Gokulashtami, Sreekrishna jayanti (incorrectly mentioned in the article as Sree jayanti are terms used in the South. Janmashtami gives a northern perspective and how it is celebrated there. Sounds confusing ? :-) Tintin
- I'll post it in Nichalp's page and ask his opinion. I don't have time to modify it at the moment as I am about to get out of the office Tintin 08:06, 25 August 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for bringing it to my notice. The anon was right in a way, so I fixed his copy/paste and redirected. I've clarified that Janmashtami is today 26th. Krishna was born at midnight (yet to come) and today is celebrated as Janmashtami. Tomorrow (27th) is the what is celebrated as Dahi Handi, where pots of curd are broken... (I'll try and get an explanatory photo :) ). I've also corrected the Anniveraries template for the 26th. User:Nichalp/sg 05:37, August 26, 2005 (UTC)
The images are in place. Thought it might interest you. User:Nichalp/sg 08:14, August 27, 2005 (UTC)
Actually, the pots are filled with water these days. Competing teams are usually sponsored by local political parties, hence most teams would sport the party's colours. (in this case the red team was the BJP). The boy who cracks the handi is the lightest of them all and so often the youngest. This year's youngest was just 3, and scaled a seven layered pyramid! [edit] My own true love
Well, yes – I am rather fond of them. Thanks for catching the one I missed. Truth be told, though, the selected anniversaries listings would look a whole lot more professional (i.e. – less like a high-school newspaper) if they used colons instead. Maybe I'll try that some time, see if I get lynched or not. Cheers, –Hajor 12:41, 27 August 2005 (UTC)
- Well, there is one colon already, right after the date .... :-) If you really want to, go for it. You won't get any lynching from me. -- PFHLai 19:13, 2005 August 27 (UTC)
[edit] katrina is five not four
Have it say this:
- Hurricane Katrina continues to strengthen reaching Category five status with winds of at least 160 mph. It has the second lowest pressure for a named American hurricane since 1851, with only Hurricane Camille having a lower measurement. Millions of people living in and around the below sea-level Louisiana city of New Orleans are leaving as the eye is expected to collide with the region within 24 hours.

I am unclear what you mean by "calendrical order" - I assumed you meant this would be "month of the year", which it is not. Can you clarify what you mean? Thanks. Guettarda 21:34, 8 September 2005 (UTC)
- AFAIK Republic Day in India is January 26 (my birthday!) I didn't realise that you read it as being August 15 (the day it actually became a republic). But as I read it, it's celebrated in Jan. Guettarda 22:38, 9 September 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Moscow
Hi, The Great Fire of Moscow started on September 14 New Style (September 2 Old Style) [3] (can't find better English source). As I know, namely New Style dates are used for Anniversaries (see e.g. Aleksandr Pushkin). Cmapm 14:30, 11 September 2005 (UTC)
- Hello, Cmapm. So the dates on Napoleon's invasion of Russia were Old Style dates, eh ? That explains it. Thank you for the clarification. I'm now more confident about the date. I almost took this historic fire off Wikipedia:Selected anniversaries/September 14. Thank you very much for your help. -- PFHLai 12:48, 2005 September 12 (UTC)
- Yes, it is, they were Old Style dates, I had fixed this in that article. Oh, don't mention it, this was pretty easy, as many Russian sources exist on this issue. BTW, in one of them is even mentioned, that fires began in the evening of September 14 [4]. Cmapm 00:26, 13 September 2005 (UTC)
- I don't know much about the topic, but I wonder if the Great Fire of Moscow (1812) deserves a page on its own with Great Fire of Moscow as a disambiguation page, listing other historic fires of Moscow: List of historic fires has Moscow burnt in 1547 and 1812, and the Moscow page mentions fires in 1238 and 1571. ... Was Moscow really burnt down so many times ? Scary .... -- PFHLai 00:48, 2005 September 13 (UTC)
- May be it does deserve. Unfortunately, I don't know much on historical topics too and I'm currently deeply involved into other topics. But I've just found a very good link (in Russian, though...) with a chronology of the main events in the history of Moscow [5]. Yes, according to it, there were large fires in 1238, 1547, 1571, 1812 (may be even more, I've looked up only these ones there). However, in that source isn't said, whether Moscow was burnt completely or not after each of these fires... Cmapm 01:16, 13 September 2005 (UTC)

- Thanks for your detailed response. Very informative. Thank you. BTW, did you see what I did on Wikipedia:Selected anniversaries/September 16 ? I hope you approve of it. I thought about including the colorful language used by Fr. Hidalgo as reported on Mexican War of Independence#Beginning of the War, but I suppose such vocabulary should not appear on the MainPage, eh ?.... :-) -- PFHLai 19:14, 15 September 2005 (UTC)
Yes, I approve fully of what you did to the anniversary listing, and look forward to seeing my statue pic on the front page -- probably this evening some time, before I go out and experience the hysterical nationalist crush in the square surrounding it. Regarding what Hidalgo actually did & said: I'm sure it's all been mythologised out of all recognition (Paul Revere syndrome?). Besides el Grito itself, legend has it that upon being told that the conspirators had been discovered, he replied, Pues no hay más remedio que ir a coger gachupines -- "So, our only option is to go out and catch us some Spaniards". Let's hear it for posterity... Cheers, –Hajor 19:39, 15 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] 19 Sep anniversaries
Hi there. Tomorrow's the 20th anniversary of the 1985 Mexico City earthquake. It was obviously a major event, but I'm too close to it to make an informed decision about its relevance for front-page featuring and (were that to happen) what should be bumped off. It doesn't help that the article isn't all that impressive a piece of writing either; I was hoping to expand it in the weeks leading up, but it doesn't seem to have happened. Oh well. Cheers, –Hajor 15:42, 18 September 2005 (UTC)
Great; thanks for that. Let's hope we do manage to attract some attention to this rather woeful little article. Leave it there for next year? No, wouldn't have thought so (unless a major improvement takes place): it was the "20 years ago" (gulp) thing that spurred me on to bothering you with it. Cheers, –Hajor 22:00, 18 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] GLG: Tess
Thank you for the messages. I am a new Wiki user and have tried to talk to people in order to hire them for this project. I will try to email you again. I am looking for someone who is very familiar with editing Wikipedia pages. GLG will have a Wikipedia page with a document containing summaries written by various doctors. This person should also have a background in healthcare so that they are familiar with the medical terminology but will not be expected to contribute to the page. Does this sound like something that you could do? We will pay you for your time (about 4 edits over 2 weeks). Please let me know and feel free to call me at 512-651-1797 to discuss further. Thanks!!! Tess - Gerson Lehrman Group 13:13, 27 September 2005 (UTC)
- Hello, Ms. Furman. I think Wikipedia could use more contents in the biomedical fields. I am adding stuffs to Wikipedia, anyways. So I suppose I can help and add your materials along the way. Your company is paying for this ? Hmmm.... I hope the materials to be added are not promotional, nor anything against Wikipedia policies. (Please see WP:NOT.) And, please understand that, in a wiki, we have almost no control over how long any contribution stays unchanged -- a very short time if someone disagrees with the contents ! Hope this clarify things. -- PFHLai 15:56, 27 September 2005 (UTC)
-
- Thank you for your understanding and for your positive response. The wikipedia entry for our healthcare council will NOT be promotional. Basically, we will make it a forum for our council members (doctors and other healthcare professionals) to educate each other and our clients (institutional investors). Our company is based on transparency, so Wiki is a great place for this interaction. As I have found out, editing and communicating in wiki is an art and we want to hire someone who is an expert, so that our council members present themselves professionally, as deserved. Did you receive my email? Please call me or email me at tfurman@glgroup.com, and we can set this up if you are interested! Thank you. Tess - Gerson Lehrman Group 19:26, 27 September 2005 (UTC)

- I too received similar talk-page message from Tess - Gerson Lehrman Group, and came across your name on looking at the history of the Gerson Lehrman Group entry. I shall cautiously respond to them, but even if this proves not to be promotional, WP is not about allowing others to form lists for their own purposes. WP is after all about creating an encyclopedia and the only lists allowed are to help in this task, eg 'Category:Physician Wikipedians' or the formation of the Doctor's mess (ie groups of like-minded wikipedians with a collective interest in a sphere of knowledge, who together can work on WP). If you have any advice or encounter with this commercial group, I as an individual would be grateful - David Rubentalk 00:20, 30 September 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Subst:
Hey mate. Just saw you on RC patrol, and noticed that you didn't use subst: in your templates. It's best to do that: what happens is the text is automatically converted onto the page, so if the template is altered, the text templated in remains as it was, and it's also more personal. Just, instead of typing {{test}}, type {{subst:test}}. Take care, --Blackcap | talk 12:20, 1 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Dead horse (sports franchises and their Wikiarticle)
Hello,
For what it is worth, I agree with you (about 5 months after the fact) that the sports teams articles should be by city rather than franchise, but I get little support on that. If you still give a rat's ass, I was eventually going to start changing some of those redirect pages (NY Giants, BRK Dodgers, STL Browns etc) into actual articles, and go against the so-called consensus. My thinking is it is easier to ask for forgiveness rather than permission. If you have any interest in this, too, maybe you could join the baseball Wikiproject; I find that it is less stressful to defend your actions when you claim they are part of "the project" and your hands are tied. I see you have other priorities right now, so there ya go.--CrazyTalk 04:37, 17 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Italics and parentheses
Hi there. Our Manual of Style has nothing on combining italics and parentheses, so I went to check what the Chicago Manual of Style has to say. Its guideline is that (i) a parenthetical that is entirely in italics or that ends and starts in italics should get italicized parens, too, and that (ii) roman parentheses should be used for a parenthetical that only (one of) ends or starts with italics or only contains (e.g.) one italicized word among roman. According to that, our anniversaries' (pictured) should be rendered like that, not as (pictured). One of the reasons it gives is to avoid squashing. But if you say you're getting squashing with the first format, not the second, maybe that pulls it into the realm of personal preferences. I don't know; maybe it's more a browser/font rendering issue. Very minor point in any case. Any thoughts? –Hajor 15:44, 3 November 2005 (UTC)
- Sorry for the much belated reply, Hajor. I have been offline. ... I'll stop using the <small> tags. This should avoid the ugly squishing effect on my screen. Thanks. -- PFHLai 18:20, 19 November 2005 (UTC)

- I know you suspended the IP address 64.251.51.135 for one week, and I just wanted to let you know that that IP address is the IP address for a high school. I was victimized by this suspension just because of some inconsiderate person that doesn't understand the quality of Wikipedia. So, if the same person(s) ever repeatedly vandalizes Wikipedia, keep in mind that it is a school IP address that you suspended. Please don't suspend it indefinetely. --G VOLTT 20:16, 17 November 2005 (UTC)
- Yes, G VOLTT, I suspended 64.251.51.135 for repeated acts of vandalism. In retrospect, a week might have been too harsh, even though previous short bans were ineffective in ending the menace. I didn't know it was a school IP. Thank you for letting me know. Sorry to have inconvenienced you and other good users at your school. I am glad that someone like you and User:Niteice are taking care of the matter. Would this help identify the culprit ? -- PFHLai 17:41, 19 November 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Main Page image protection (sorry)
Hi PFHLai,
I just wanted to say I'm sorry for the images you had to unprotect again - I had the Main Page open and didn't reload it on 0:00 UTC (duh, timezones), and since this was the first time I did it I had to look for the templates, and that took a while (I guess the Angela Merkel picture would still be unprotected though if it wasn't for me... or did I mess that matter up too?) -- grm_wnr Esc 00:26, 23 November 2005 (UTC)
- Hey, grm_wnr, there's no need to apologise. It's better to be safe than sorry. ... Good job with Merkel's pic. Those people at ITN keep forgetting. We all have to keep an eye on the image there. ... Happy editing. :-) -- PFHLai 06:18, 23 November 2005 (UTC)
[edit] kenya referendum/kibaki news item
Hi,I updated the Mwai Kibaki page earlier with info on the his dissolving of the cabinet, should that be moved to the referendum page, since it's obviously part of the fallout?--Gozar 04:44, 24 November 2005 (UTC)
- Hello, Gozar. I think both pages should mention these events, but the referendum page could use more details on the fallout. I'm not going to add much as I ain't familiar with the topic. Please contribute as much as you see fit. Happy editing. :-) -- PFHLai 04:52, 24 November 2005 (UTC)
[edit] WikiThanks
Hi PFHLai, Every time I've checked Talk:Main Page recently, I see you leaving helpful and polite responses and responding to users who point out issues on the protected templates. I just wanted to let you know that it has not gone unnoticed. Cheers, BanyanTree 03:20, 6 December 2005 (UTC)
- Hello, BanyanTree. Thank you for your kind words. I've seen you around Talk:Main Page, too. I was just following your lead there. So, you deserve more WikiThanks ! :-) Cheers ! -- PFHLai 03:30, 6 December 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Thanks for the save!
Hey, thanks for the save with regards to Malaysian lock-up detainee abuse scandal. I'm kind of relatively new at this, so it was kind of nerve-wracking for me to go through the whole vandalism procedure. Don't know if I did the right thing, but I added our mutual acquaintance into a nice little niche in the Low Vandalism in Progress Page. Again, thanks! :-)--T-Boy 05:23, 6 December 2005 (UTC)
- Hello, T-Boy. No need to thank me for cleaning up vandalism in Wikipedia. We all do a little here and there. (Wish we didn't need to, though.) Happy editing. :-) -- PFHLai 05:35, 6 December 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Thanks
