[edit] Music scene

I removed the sentence "[Pewsey] has a growing music scene with bands such as Doubtless Sound leading the charge of new music from the area" from the introductory paragraph. If it needs to be mentioned at all, perhaps it could be included lower down the page? Hertzsprung 19:53, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] ePewsey

I added info on this fantastic local resource but it was removed as it was considered advertising. I don't see how promoting access to free broadband can be construed as advertising. Many rural communities lack this kind of resource and I think Pewsey should be proud of ePewsey and allowed to celebrate it. I have replaced the original info with something that's brief and informative but still feel the original wording was friendlier and therefore more appropriate for this friendly village. ePewsey and PACT work hard to get government funding for projects (ie training) in and around Pewsey and they should be allowed to promote that through Wikipedia.

I'm sure that PACT is a very worthy organisation, but it should not be included in this article in its current form. I have retained it for the time being, however the content may need to be edited. However, the ePewsey section that I reverted earlier and have reverted again is advertising and should not be included in this article. Please refer to What Wikipedia is not. --Vivenot 15:14, 29 January 2007 (UTC)

Having looked at the link you suggested I'm still unclear why a free local resource should not be included. When I click on [[1]]and find a link to an up-to-date timetable I see it as a service rather than an advert or incorrect use of an encyclopedia. A quick look at [[2]] shows a far more commercial Media section.
If we were to put

[edit] Education

ePewsey - Local Computer Courses
or

[edit] Local Charities

ePewsey - Free Broadband Access for all
would that be OK with you? For the record - I have no interest in ePewsey other than a high regard for what they continue to achieve for the local community.
I think it's important for you to understand that access to broadband is not as readily available in rural communities as it is in London. This is why it's important that ePewsey is included in Wikipedia. It's also important for the world outside Pewsey to see that it's a modern dynamic community. The impression created when the only 'allowable' info on Wikipedia is - 'it's popular with commuters, it's got history and someone who once worked for Channel4 lives there' - is a little insulting to the good people of Pewsey.
If you wish to be the arbiter of how Pewsey is viewed from afar I think you should mention your connection to it on your user page.
Is there a corner of Wikipedia one can turn to in such circumstances to offer impartial wisdom?

Firstly, I have no intention of insulting "the good people of Pewsey" (FYI I grew up there). I removed the section on ePewsey as I don't think it is suitable for a Wikipedia article. However, I'm not the ultimate arbiter of what should appear in this article, so I've referred it for mediation. --Vivenot 00:32, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Mediation Cabal

Ok, I'm Jem and I'm the mediator, here to give a neutral POV. Although strictly my role is to facilitate discussion, I don't mind pointing users in the direction of resources in order to help them understand policies.

Having read the past edits, I think that the policies of neutral point of view and notability come into play here. Whilst the fact that ePewsey may be a very useful resource, the way it was phrased was very much an advertisement. The company or service does not meet notability requirements (as above) because it has not had "multiple non trivial published works" created on its subject. Similarly PACT does not appear to meet these notability requirements.

It would however be entirely acceptable to create a new section entitiled "Amenities" (or similar) and give a brief but detailed description of the facilities of all varieties Pewsey has to offer, whilst ensuring a NPOV is kept. This could encompass PACT as no doubt it does have a fairly great extent on life in Pewsey, and also to a lesser extent ePewsey. It may be better in the latter case, however, to avoid naming a particular company, and stating "Pewsey has provision for people to recieve training in technology" etc.

Please feel free to discuss these proposals, and agree, disagree or implement them as you see fit. Jem 18:51, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

Hi Jem, thank you for mediating. I feel it best, as a newbie, to leave James to add whatever mention of PACT or ePewsey he feels most appropriate in light of your suggestions and our discussions. I'm confident that as a 'son of Pewsey' he will consider Pewsey as a living community and give PACT and/or ePewsey an appropriate inclusion.
James, thank you for enabling me to see a deeper side of Wikipedia and I hope you don't consider my request/hand over as presumptuous. GidsR

Hello Jem, thanks a lot for mediating. Your suggestion of having a neutral point of view "Amenities" section seems like an excellent solution. GidsR, I hope that my intervention didn't come across as being too heavy-handed, as this would contravene Wikipedia's policy on newbies. Besides, we both have Pewsey's best interests at heart. Please feel free to go ahead and make the changes recommended by Jem yourself as you seem to know a lot more about the details of PACT and ePewsey that I do. Bear in mind Jem's advice to keep the article NPOV rather than promoting a particular company or organisation. Let me know if I can be of any further assistance. Best regards. --Vivenot 10:48, 31 January 2007 (UTC)

Hi James, How does this look to you? I hope I'm getting the hang of NPOV! Best regards GidsR

Just to let you know that I'm closing this MedCab case, seeing as everything is resolved as afar as the dispute is concerned. Best of luck with editing. Regards, Jem 18:34, 5 February 2007 (UTC)
