[edit] My attempt to keep the little content that's there so far
...and to anyone passing through - I hope this isn't breaking any guidelines or anything - I just wanted to keep a copy of the content to date, in case the subject is deemed to become notable at a later date, then i've got a record of this starting point... if that's frowned upon, or blatantly not allowed - let me know - thanks folks.... Lonelygirl15 (first name Bree) is a video blogger at YouTube (click here for her Profile). Her video blogs have become incredibly popular in fairly short order, leading to much speculation as to the honesty of the content. Bree has become famous as a result of her use of the youtube, which she used as a refuge from her authoritarian father.
I was usually stuck studying the Treaty of Versailles or Occam’s razor — making videos was much more fun,[1]
Lonelygirl15's partner in the vlogs is Danielbeast - credited with supporting her in her use of technology, for example helping her set-up her webcam.
[edit] Controversy
Due to inconsistancies in the vlogs, some YouTube users have suggested that lonelygirl15 may be part of a teaser campaign for a TV show in development. Speculation has reached as far as the New York Times, with Lonelygirl15 appearing in a nytimes.com blog on 4th August 2006 discussing her explosion in popularity. - [1].
The central themes of their vlogs are;
- Unrequited love / romantic confusion - Bree is unsure of how to react when Daniel confesses that he 'likes her'
- Rebellion against Parenting - Bree is homeschooled by parents whom she implies are also strictly religious.
- Forbidden experimentation - her parents are apparantly unaware of her video blogs.
As the vlogs have aired, a story arc has emerged which is almost Shakesperian in its nature. The treatment of the above themes, and the nature of the dialogue strongly suggests scripting to many users. The fact that her website domain name was registered a month before her video posts began on YouTube, and the fact her 'strict' parents allow her (a 16 year old girl) to spend time alone with Daniel (an 18 year old male who has graduated highschool) in her room, alone, with the door shut, further fuel speculation that Lonelygirl15 is a fictional creation.
Her fansite domain (lonelygirl15.com) was registered on the 12th May 2006, while her first YouTube video was posted on the 24th May 2006. Many question why her fansite domain would have been registered before she even had videos uploaded, let alone fans. This is one of the most common reasons used by those who assert lonelygirl15 is fake and/or a vehicle for some sort of company or movie.
In her most recent video, "What Did Daniel and Dad Talk About", the picture quality is notably diminished, though this may have been intentional, in a bid to dispell the growing controversy. When Bree is seated to talk directly at the camera, the picture quality is greatly enhanced.
[edit] Trivia
Lonelygirl15 has various signature items/props that appear in her videos. Recurring props include a pink feather boa, a safari hat, and her beloved puppet Purple Monkey.
During the video, "What did Daniel and Dad Talk About", Daniel is about to light candles next to a picture of Aleister Crowley, when he is stopped by Bree.
