In the television cartoon Family Guy, Petoria was a fictional land-locked nation in existence for several months during the year 2000, in the heart of the American state of Rhode Island.

The official secession of Petoria from the United States of America occurred on July 12, 2000. Peter Griffin, a blue collar Irish-American Catholic from Quahog, Rhode Island, frustrated by his nation's limitations on his property rights, proclaimed the territories surrounding his home, located on Spooner Sreet, an independent Nation.
The precise events of 2000, which led up to the independence of Petoria have long been disputed among historians and local citizens alike, not to mention by the Government of the United States of America and Peter Griffin himself. It is commonly suspected that Griffin's grievance lies in two main events: (a) the U.S. Internal Revenue Service's refusal to refund a disputed tax anomally; and (b) the Griffin family's desire to build a swimming pool in their backyard, which lead local Mayor Adam West to reveal the existence of a zoning variance in Quahog, whereby the Griffin house is not in fact considered an official territory of the United States of America. In response, Griffin thus declared his house the new independent micronation of "Petoria".
Events soon escalated, however, which served to endanger the future of this embryonic nation. First, abusing his new-found diplomatic immunity, Peter Griffin spent the first night of Petoria's independence violating various laws in neighboring Quahog. Later, at a General Assembly meeting of the United Nations, an Iraqi diplomat, upon commenting: “I used to be a laughing stock around here until my country invaded Kuwait”, advised Griffin to embark upon militant expansionist policies. In accordance, Pretoria then proceeded to annex the neighboring swimming pool of Quahog resident Joe Swanson, which he renamed "Johio". He received enthusiastic support in this endeavor from world dignitories including Slobodan Milošević, Saddam Hussein, Muammar al-Qaddafi, Fidel Castro, Manuel Noriega, Ayatollah Khomeini and Mao Zedong, who were among the guests at a BBQ reception held at the Griffin household.
In response to the territorial ambitions of Petoria, the United States enacted “Operation Desert Clam”, thus blockading this nation, thereby forcing Griffin's wife and three children to evacuate under the threat of the United States Army's bombing campaign, "Operation bomb-the-crap-out-of-your-house". Peter Griffin is thereby forced into negotiating a peace, and repatriation of his family, thereby marking the demise of Petoria as an independent nation.

Petoria had a free-market economy, with no state enterprises. It is primarily service industry orientated, with Peter Griffin having worked as an assembly line worker at the Happy Go Lucky Toy Factory in neighboring Quahog. He currently works in the Pawtucket Brewery Shipping Dept. Livestock: 1 dog.
