Peterborough railway station serves the city of Peterborough, England. It lies on the East Coast Main Line (ECML). It is a major interchange, as it benefits from having both the north-south ECML, as well as east-west local services. There is on site car parking, a large Royal Mail Sorting Office, and a hotel all within easy reach. Within 10 minutes walk is Peterborough city centre, and the Queensgate shopping centre.

[edit] Description

The station has a small concourse and ticket office which was redesigned and opened in September 2004. The new facilities were part of GNER’s £10 million station improvement programme to modernise facilities at key stations along the East Coast Main Line. The modern travel centre is part of a £1 million upgrade which includes new passenger lounges on platforms 2 and 3, new toilet facilities on platforms 2, 4 and 5, new customer information screens and improved security including the installation of CCTV cameras within the station and car park. The concourse also has a small shop and cafe.

Platforms 1, 2 and 3 are usually for trains to and from London Kings Cross. Platform 1 is a bay platform for the terminating First Capital Connect (FCC) trains which also use platform 3 alternately. Platform 2 is for the southbound express GNER services. Platforms 2 and 3 are also used by Central Trains services for Spalding. Platform 4 is for use of express GNER trains heading north towards Scotland. This platform along with platform 5 is also used by Central Trains services south to East Anglia, north to Liverpool and west to Birmingham. However, during times of disruption or delays, trains from particular operating companies may use different platforms from those described above.

Platforms 3, 4 and 5 are accessible by means of a passenger footbridge, or via the ramp at the far end of platform 2 with staff assistance.

There are a pair of through tracks between platforms 3 and 4 for non-stop passenger services. These are used occasionally by GNER trains, but more commonly by Hull Trains services. To the west of platform 5 there are goods lines which used to serve the old industrial areas in the locality. Some of these tracks are still used by freight services.

For general assistance there is a customer information point located on platform 2, as well as customer services desks near the first class waiting room and on platform 5.

[edit] Other stations in Peterborough

The original name of Peterborough railway station was Peterborough North to distinguish it from a second station which previously existed called Peterborough East. It was located just past the town bridge on the Norwich line. It is believed that Peterborough East was closed post-modernisation; some pictures show the station as having two platforms however only the remains of one platform is visible at present.
